Frank Milligan

I visited Harold Park at Low Moor in Bradford last weekend. I was driving that way and took the opportunity to visit the memorial to Frank Milligan, the Yorkshire amateur killed in the Boer War. I saw it years ago in its original position in the park. I also saw it last year in its relatively new position in a well maintained memorial garden in the park. There is the original memorial stone with the original bronze plaque to Milligan, unveiled by Lord Hawke in 1902. Booth's Yard

An appropriate day to mention Booth's Yard, Pudsey, which Hawke mentioned a short while ago.Today is the 96th anniversary of Major Booth's death on the Somme during the first day of the Battle of the Somme.Hawke, you posed the question did we believe that Booth's Yard was named in memory of Major Booth and I responded that we did.I read somewhere - can't recall where offhand - that that was the case.In fact it seems to be named after his father's grocery shop, which stood and successor premises ....

Should it be moved to Headingley, or to a different site in Huddersfield?Personally I would love to see it - or a smaller replica - at Headingley.Link: photo   hawke Posted on 07/05/2012 12:19a reply to the Triumvirate Edited On: 07/05/2012 12:47Report ....

Jackson And Welton

Those of you who recall a final posting from the Yorkshire boundary walk may remember a visit to the grave of Sir Stanley Jackson a mile or so from the Humber and how he is buried an admittedly long six hit from the Welton Cricket Club. I was surfing the net and came across the following interesting article. All very splendid. The address of Welton & Brough CC’s ground has undergone a name change to reflect links with one of Yorkshire and England’s cricketing ....

Hawke's Ashes

I also came across this interesting article..Lord Hawke and West Norwood Cemetery by Tony Bradbury One of the curiosities of Yorkshire cricket is that in death Lord Hawke had little connection with the county that made him in his day almost as famous as his illustrious ancestor Admiral Hawke of Quiberon Bay.Martin Bladen, 7th Baron Hawke, was born at the family seat in Lincolnshire in 1860, but his playing days for Yorkshire and England were long over when he married Mrs ....
