Alan Curbishley has asked the Hammers’ fans to be more ‘realistic’ about what the side can achieve this year, after hearing boos ringing out around the ground despite winning against basement club Derby.

‘After losing our last three games it was important that we bounced back. I would like to call for a bit of appreciation and realism. There is a great lack of appreciation of what we have done this season,’ he said.

‘We have managed to keep away from the danger area. On Friday morning we were scratching our heads to see how we would put a team together.

‘The players have done really well and looking back this has been a successful season.’

‘I knew it was going to be a tough game today, with all the expectation levels on us, especially playing Derby in the position they find themselves in. I’ll look back on the result tomorrow and I’ll be well pleased with it.

‘We’ve managed to keep ourselves out of any trouble, so I will look back at this season as a success.

‘Young Tomkins came in and did fantastically well for us.

One of the few bright sparks of the game was the continued blooding of the youngsters, as West Ham looks to re-invigorate it’s production line of English talent. James Tomkins did very well in the heart of defence against Lucas Neill, though Freddie Sears didn’t do as well as could be expected up front.

However, it’s fair to say the weight of expectation has been heaped on his shoulders, some naming him ‘the next Rooney’ already, so to see him getting games under his belt is more that good enough at this stage of the season.

Should no more than two strikers join the Hammers in the summer, young Sears will make a valuable addition to the squad, and hopefully will live up to his bright reputation.
