Well, the worst kept secret in football after the sacking of former manager Gianfranco Zola has now finally been confirmed. Yes, Avram Grant is the new man in charge at Upton Park after signing a four year deal earlier today. The two Daves are delighted to have finally got their man, and are hoping he can bring success to East London given his record in the English game, with Sullivan saying "I am delighted to welcome Avram to West Ham and am confident he will prove a success. "We have taken our time over this appointment and are certain we have got the right man." |

Grant took Chelsea to within a penalty kick of winning the 2008 Champions League final against Manchester United before being sacked by Roman Abramovich days later. He then returned to his previous role as director of football at Portsmouth in 2009 before replacing Paul Hart as manager. The south coast club enjoyed a second run to the FA Cup final, where ironically they met Grant's former club Chelsea- unluckily for the Israeli he was to come out on the losing side again. It was believed that if Grant was the man to succeed Zola, he would renew a partnership with the Italian's right hand man Steve Clarke. Although the club have not confirmed anything, several reports on Wednesday 26 June claimed that the Scot had gone the same way as the man who asked for his assistance when he was appointed in September 2008. After constant speculation regarding possible new recruits, several names from Fratton Park have been linked with a switch to East London. These include Kevin Prince-Boateng, Nadir Belhadj and former loanees Frederic Piquionne and Jamie O'Hara, as well as former Hammer Yossi Benayoun and Espanyol's Ben Sahar. In my opinion I believe this to be a good appointment, and wish him every success in his new role. |
