Today's Daily Mail claims that West Ham United and Liverpool are battling it out for the signature of Diego Tardelli.

The 25 year old is currently playing for Brazilian side Atletico Belo Horizonte. However, he has had previous experience in European football with spells at PSV Eindhoven and Real Betis.

It is in his home country that he has really excelled though, with 19 goals in 34 games for his club last season.

West Ham's co-owners David Sullivan and David Gold, who have this morning increased their stake in the club to 60%, fancy taking a chance on him in the Premier League. Although Tardelli has only been selected as a back up player for his Country at the World Cup in South Africa, he is none the less a good finisher.

An asking price of £5m has been quoted but it is unclear whether West Ham will be priced out of a deal, given that the owners have repeatedly said that their focus is on making cuts at the club.
