Former Kaizer Chiefs jack-of-all-trades David Obua is having trials with the Hammers, and is reportedly not doing too badly.

The Ugandan international is a free agent after leaving the South African side at the end of last year, and has been linked with a number of clubs in Italy, Sweden and Egypt among others.

“Obua traveled to England aboard Kenya Airways on invitation for trials. The training staff at West Ham said that he did well and was quite impressive,” a source told KickOff.com.

It would be tricky to see how the deal could go through however, as Uganda are ranked at 97 in the world, and to get a work permit a player has to have turned out for his country in 75 per cent of games, and the country itself has to be in the top 70.

The only other way around it is if the club appeals to the work permit board, and can convince them the player can have a significant contribution to the English game.

Doesn't seem like a utility player on a free from South Africa would really fill that criteria, does it?
