West Ham United turned up at Old Trafford on Tuesday night with high expectations that they could further damage Manchester United's title challenge after their defeat at Everton on Saturday and the Hammers comprehensive demolition of Hull City.

For 38 minutes it looked a distinct possibility. Up to this point it was a very even encounter with both sides producing crisp, entertaining football. West Ham probably had the better chances, the best of which came on 20 minutes when Valon Behrami fired just wide of the post.

Minutes later United keeper Ben Foster just managed to keep out a deflected looping shot from Alessandro Diamanti.

However, Wayne Rooney converted Luis Antonio Valencia's superb first-time cross with a diving header to put United ahead. They never looked back.

The second half started with Mido replacing the slightly out of sorts Guilermo Franco but it was United who were straight onto the attack and almost doubled their advantage when Park Ji-Sung hit the woodwork.

On 55 minutes Valencia and Rooney combined again to double the lead and it was clear that West Ham were heading for defeat.

Michael Owen came on for Dimitar Berbatov with 12 minutes left and finished expertly to extinguish any lingering West Ham hopes.
