West Ham United look as if they're desperately trying to increase their firepower by being linked with a plethora of strikers within the last four hours, and who's to say they won't be linked with anymore between now and 5pm!

With Benni McCarthy now signed and news of a possible move for Brazilian striker Ilan and talks with former Middlesborough and Tottenham striker Mido arife, it will be interesting to see just how many are signed by Tuesday morning.

When Sullivan and Gold took over nearly a fortnight ago, they met with manager Gianfranco Zola to discuss transfer targets. Zola reportedly said that he was looking at two strikers and a left back.

Now it seems that the Club are only looking at Striking reinforcements, but I wonder how many of these reported targets are actually Zola's choice?

In an interview with Sky Sports News on 20th January, David Gold was asked about transfer targets and when the name of McCarthy was mentioned, Gold seemed Cagey on the matter. Perhaps this was because he knew nothing about it, but most fans knew of the deal to sign the striker back in 2006 when his club at the time (Porto) decided to pull out of negotiations at the last minute.

However, in last Monday's pre-match press conference ahead of the trip to Fratton Park, Zola, who had previously been linked with Stoke striker James Beattie, didn't have anything further to say on the matter of which players he was targeting, although reports last thursday claimed that he was set to sign Beattie as cover in the striking department.

I personally think that the transfer window was never a good idea because as soon as it opens the press link players with clubs left, right and centre at the slightest mention of a name. How are we as fans ever to know which lines have substance and which are just speculation?
