West Ham United striker Carlton Cole could face a four month spell on the sidelines after suffering a suspected knee ligament injury in Saturday's 5-3 victory over Burnley.

If serious, the injury could also keep the striker out of Fabio Capello's world cup plans. Cole collided with Burnley keeper Brian Jensen on Saturday which resulted in him having to be replaced at half-time.

Shortly before the injury, Cole had already converted from the spot to send the Hammers in to a 3-0 lead. After the match, Manager Gianfranco Zola said: 'It is his right knee. He hit his knee and twisted it a little bit. If it's ligaments then, yes, it could be a while. But I'm not a doctor.'

'Everybody knows how important Carlton is for us, so hopefully it will not prove to be too bad.'

Meanwhile, midfielder Valon Behrami is to undergo keyhole surgery on his knee due to a cartilage problem and could be out for a further three weeks.
