West Ham defender could be the subject of a £2 million bid from Premier League new boys Stoke.

Tony Pulis is reportedly ready to use some of the squad rebuilding cash towards the Welsh international.

Gabbidon joined the Hammers in the summer of 2005, but has slipped down the pecking order after some less than spectacular displays.

The problem for the newly-promoted is the endless conundrum debated by those holding the purse strings: Spend money to stay up? Or try and continue with largely the same squad?

Many have looked at the case of Sunderland for guidance; spending over £40 million on players was enough to keep them up, but was it too much?

Then one looks at the case of Derby, who bought players like Andy Griffin from Portsmouth for roughly the same money, and we all know what happened to them.

So while we would like to make some cash from Gabbidon (though the idea of him staying as a decent squad player is more appealing) would he be right?

See, even football fans can be neutral sometimes!
