West Ham earned a point at Ewood Park yesterday in a game few will remember as a classic. Manager Gianfranco Zola opted to start the side which lost to Spurs last Sunday in a reshuffle from the Carling Cup win over Millwall, and Rovers did similarly as they gave new signing Pascal Chimbonda his debut after a move from Spurs, while Michel Salgado was on the bench. The Hammers started brightest thanks to a number of half chances for Carlton Cole although these came to nothing, and on ten minutes James Collins gave away a free kick as he fouled Morten Gamst Pedersen- Jason Roberts heading wide after David Dunn had sent the ball his way.

Ten minutes later Cole was at it again after going on a run and brushing off three opponents before firing his shot wide, Luis Jimenez then being denied by a Chimbonda tackle before the hosts reasserted themselves after Julien Faubert was forced to head behind after a Christopher Samba attempt on goal. Tackles flew in as both sides tried to cancel each other out and the first half ended scoreless.

As the second period began the Irons started strongest as Collins and Cole both drove efforts at Robinson in the Rovers goal. Mark Noble then got himself booked for a crunching tackle on Dunn, and with an hour played both managers opted for substitutions- N’Zonzi replaced by young Canadian David Hoilett for the home side while Zola opted to send on Kieron Dyer for Jimenez.

Towards the end of the game it was Rovers who looked the most threatening of the two sides as first Hoilett split the Hammers defence and sent a chipped shot wide before Pedersen blasted a free kick over after Upson had fouled Dunn. In the dying minutes Jack Collison was withdrawn for Radoslav Kovac, but the game ended scoreless and it was all in all a hard earned point for the visitors.
