The Daily Telegraph have reported today that West Ham United will step up their chase for Moroccan international striker Marouane Chamakh.

The 25 year old Bordeaux forward who scored twice in Saturday's 3-2 win over Sochaux remains a target for London rivals Arsenal, but it is believed that the Hammers Chief Executive Scott Duxbury has flown over to France with an increased bid of up to £7 million in order to boost the club's forward line before the transfer window closes on September 1.

It is understood that the French side do not want to lose their prize asset but are unwilling to let Chamakh carry out the threat of playing to the end of his current contract and leaving the club as a free agent next summer.

In order to finance the deal West Ham may have to sell Welsh defender James Collins to Stoke for around £5 million, and it is understood that manager Gianfranco Zola is keen to move on some of the fringe players, including Nigel Quashie and Julien Faubert, from his squad.

Reports that Zola is unhappy with the club's financial situation have been dismissed despite the balancing of the books, but if Zola can carry on landing his targets it is sure to improve his mood in the Upton Park hot seat.
