The Guardian today reports that West Ham United are looking at signing striker Luca Toni from German giants Bayern Munich. It is believed that club CEO Scott Duxbury and technical director Gianluca Nani have travelled to Europe to pursue potential targets, including the already acknowledged pursuit of Barcelona’s Eidur Gudjohnsen. Manager Gianfranco Zola has reportedly told the pair that he wants an experienced striker with proven pedigree as he works to improve on last season’s events.

The 32 year old is an accomplished Italian international, with 16 goals from 47 appearances. He began his career with Modena, dropping into the lower leagues until 2000 when he moved to Vicenza of Serie A.  But it was his 2003 move to Palermo which saw him hit the headlines for the first time- 50 goals in 80 appearances overall first helping them back into Serie A and then getting them into European competition as he led them into the UEFA Cup, which brought him to the attention of Fiorentina- who signed him for 10 million Euros in 2005.

31 goals in his first season took them into fourth in the league and a European spot, although this was revoked after the ‘calciopoli’ scandal when the club was found guilty of ‘shady dealings’ and deducted 19 points. Two years later he moved to Germany for 11 million Euros and to date has 38 goals from 56 appearances at the Allianz Arena.
