Hammers in high spirits despite cancellation

Despite the cancellation of Saturday’s friendly match against Werder Bremen of the German Bundesliga, coach Steve Clarke is adamant that the pre-season remains an important part of preparations for a new Premier League campaign.

Bad weather in Austria- where the side are currently based- put paid to the game, which will be followed by fixtures against Turkish side Bursaspor on Wednesday and Slovenians ND Mura 05 the following day.

Clarke told www.whufc.com that ‘ These games are about getting the team to start to work together, play together and see how they respond to everything.’

And he added that the players had indeed been working hard since their arrival, stressing that he wanted them to win their pre-season run outs, gain match fitness and avoid injuries.

It is expected that new signing Luis Jimenez, as well as those squad members who joined up with the Hammers on Monday owing to international commitments.

Robert Green, Matthew Upson and  Carlton Cole (England)  alongside Luis Boa Morte (Portugal) will now come back against Bursaspor, though Scott Parker is rated an injury doubt
