After much speculation over the past couple of weeks, it was finally confirmed on Wednesday morning that Darren Randolph's medical had been completed and the goalkeeper was back at West Ham United.

The Republic of Ireland international has arrived as cover for both Lukasz Fabianski and David Martin after he joined on a three-and-a-half-year deal for an undisclosed fee from Sky Bet Championship side Middlesbrough.

The search for a new goalkeeper started before the reappointment of manager David Moyes on 29 December and it appeared Randolph was the club's top target.

The former Birmingham City stopper previously played for the East Londoners during 2015 and 2017. Once it became clear that the then Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart would be signing for the club on a season-long loan, former Irons' boss Slaven Bilic allowed Randolph to move to Teeside and join up with Garry Monk.

The return of the Irishman certainly casts a doubt over the future of Roberto Jiménez Gago, despite the Spaniard only arriving as Manuel Pellegrini's first summer signing in July.

It remains to be seen whether Randolph will be in the squad for the visit of Everton on Saturday, as Fabianski is currently unavailable after the Pole was forced off with a re-occurrence of his hip injury in Friday's defeat at newly-promoted Sheffield United.

However, it was confirmed on Monday that he will only be out for a couple of weeks and could return in time for the home encounter with Premier League leaders Liverpool on 29 January.
