West Ham United face the longest road trip of their current stint of away games when they travel to Rodney Parade tonight, as they take on Sky Bet League Two team Newport County for a second round Carabao Cup tie in the Southern Section.

After three consecutive defeats at the start of the last campaign, this competition provided a first success for the Hammers. Although they had to come from a goal down, they produced a stunning second-half comeback and knocked out Sky Bet League One outfit AFC Wimbledon, as they won 3-1.

Having already got off the mark in the Premier League with a 1-1 draw at Brighton and Hove Albion and then following up with a 3-1 win at Watford on Saturday, they will now look to kick on and progress into the next round.

Last season's run in the competition eventually ended when Manuel Pellegrini's side were knocked out by fellow top-flight side and fierce rivals Tottenham Hotspur in Stratford in round four. That was after thrashing Sky Bet League Two outfit Macclesfield Town 8-0 to make it to that stage.

Michael Flynn's Newport side are fifth in the League Two table and the East Londoners will be well aware of their cup pedigree in recent years as they have caused shock results against both Leicester City and Tottenham Hotspur.

It is likely that Lukasz Fabianski will get a well-earned break in preparation for the weekend's game at home to newly-promoted Norwich City, meaning Pellegrini will have to choose between Roberto Jiménez Gago or David Martin to fill in for the Pole.

The Hammers' boss hinted after Saturday's victory that summer signing Albian Ajeti will play some part in the game, while other players to feature may include Aaron Cresswell, Fabián Balbuena, Michail Antonio, Andriy Yarmolenko and Javier Hernández.

Pablo Fornals dropped to the bench at Vicarage Road but he could be welcomed back into the starting line-up, while Pablo Zabaleta and Carlos Sánchez could also slot into defence. Gonçalo Cardoso is another player that may make the squad.

The match is a 7:45pm kick-off with live coverage being screened by Sky Sports from 7:30pm. The referee is Stephen Martin.
