With the summer transfer window closing in two days, West Ham United have confirmed the signing of 18-year-old defender Gonçalo Cardoso from Portuguese top-flight club Boavista for £2.75m on a five-year contract with the option of a further twelve months.

Cardoso becomes Manuel Pellegrini's fifth summer signing, following the captures of goalkeepers Roberto Jiménez Gago and David Martin, attacking midfielder Pablo Fornals and striker Sébastien Haller.

Although only a young player, Cardoso has already had a taste of first-team football at Boavista. After making his debut last October, the centre-back was a regular fixture for his former club but is more likely to start his career in East London as part of the Development Squad. He may then make the progression to first-team level depending on how the team fares in both the Carabao and FA Cups and who they are paired against.
