With a week to go before West Ham United begin their 2016/17 campaign with a trip across London to Chelsea, the club have today completed the signing of 22 year-old Frenchman Arthur Masuaku on a four-year deal from Greek superleague champions Olympiacos for £6.2m.

With Aaron Cresswell out for four months with a knee ligament injury, manager Slaven Bilic has been on the hunt for cover at left-back and after a season-long loan deal for Inter Milan's Davide Santon fell through on Friday because of a failed medical, the Croatian finally has an option.

After spending most of his early years in his home country, the defender moved to Olympiacos in July 2014 where he was an immediate selection for the starting line-up and continued to feature, playing a total of 40 games in that campaign.

With the club involved in Champions League action that year, the player proved to be a hero, as he scored one of the goals in his opening European match; a 3-2 victory over the previous season's runners-up Athletico Madrid.

The season turned out to go well for him, as the was a double winner during his first year abroad, as he also won the Greek Cup.

West Ham's latest signing is no stranger to English teams, as he came up against Arsenal the following season but was unfortunately knocked out of all cup competitions. However, he did help his team claim the league title in a campaign that only saw them lose once in 30 games.

Having already played in Europe this season for Olympiacos in their Champions League third qualifying round defeat to Hapoel Be’er Sheva, he won't be eligible to play in the Hammers' Europa League play-off against FC Astra Giurgiu, but will be available should they progress.

Masuaku becomes West Ham's eighth summer signing of this window with a ninth soon to be completed after personal terms were agreed with Swansea striker Andre Ayew. News on that deal will appear here as soon as it is confirmed.
