The summer transfer window has now opened for business and West Ham United have moved quickly to capture midfielder Pedro Obiang from Italian Serie A side Sampdoria.

The 23-year-old Spaniard becomes the club's second signing following the acquisition of goalkeeper Darren Randolph who will arrive on 1 July.

Speculation concerning Obiang's potential move to Upton Park first came about on Monday evening when Sky Sports News reported that the club had opened talks with the player.

The following day turned out to be an eventful one for the Hammers as later that evening, after it had been announced that Slaven Bilic was the man they had chosen to replace Sam Allardyce, David Gold took to his Twitter account and suggested that a major signing could be on his way to East London.

West Ham finally put an end to that speculation today by announcing, via whufc.com, that the talks had been successful and he had agreed terms on a four-year contract.

The midfielder made 34 league appearances during his time in Italy, but only managed 3 goals.

Obiang is no stranger to Upton Park as he was part of the Sampdoria squad who provided the opposition for West Ham's final pre-season match before the start of the last Premier League campaign.

He started the game on the bench and was on the losing side as West Ham eventually ran out 3-2 winners.

West Ham's summer spending is not expected to end there as the club prepares for a busy season. Today's Daily Express carries a report claiming that Bilic wants to make Chelsea striker Loic Remy his first signing.
