After it was confirmed that Andy Carroll would be out for the rest of the season, due to the knee injury suffered in last weeks goalless draw away at Southampton, West Ham United have been forced to delve into the market and search for a replacement.

On Wednesday evening, they agreed to sign Brazilian striker Nenê on a short-term deal until the end of the campaign.

The deal was able to be completed outside of the transfer window because the player is a free agent after his release from Al-Gharafa.

The Hammers had the option to recall Mauro Zarate from his season-long loan spell at Queens Park Rangers, but missed the deadline to do so.

At that time the club were hopeful that Carroll, who had picked up the original injury at his former club Liverpool on 31 January, would recover in time to face Manchester United however, the former Newcastle United man was unable to play against the Red Devils but was deemed fit enough to make the bench at St Mary's just three days after the home clash with Louis Van Gaal's men.

Carroll entered the fray as a 55th minute substitute at Southampton, but having used all his substitutes after Adrian had been red carded after an hour, it meant that Carroll was left on the pitch for what (as big Sam said) was "nuisance value".

I know West Ham haven't always had a good record win it comes to players that are near the end of their careers, we will just have to see how Nenê gets on as he may be involved in some capacity when the Irons travel to White Hart Lane on Sunday.
