The January transfer window finally opened for business on Saturday and West Ham United have wasted no time in confirming their first signing.

In his programme notes for the home game against West Bromwich Albion on New Year's Day, manager Sam Allardyce speaking about the club's policy in the transfer market stated, "As I and the Joint-Chairmen have said repeatedly, we will only bring in players who will improve the squad significantly, or promising youngsters who we can develop into first-teamers of the future."

Well, it was confirmed that talanted 21-year-old Canadian defender, Doneil Henry has moved to East London from Cypriot first division club, Apollon Limassol on a long-term contract for an undisclosed fee.

There has been widespread press speculation regarding this transfer for some time and Allardyce, together with the Board have been monitoring the player following previous trials at Upton Park. Henry was recommended to Big Sam by former Blackburn Rovers' defender Ryan Nelsen.

Henry moved to Limassol in 2014 from Toronto FC before immediately being loaned back to the MLS club.

Henry was voted Canadian under 20 player of the year in 2012 and has been a regular for the Canadian national side over the last two years. Allardyce is hoping to use him in the first-team at some point this season and Henry is also desperate to be involved.
