After much speculation it has finally been confirmed by the club's official website that West Ham United have signed midfielder Cheikou Kouyate from Anderlecht for an undisclosed fee on a four-year deal.

Sam Allardyce was desperate to land the player but it was understood that Valencia were also very keen on trying to get a deal rubber-stamped.

The length of his contract means Kouyate will be with the East London club when they move to the Olympic Stadium and the Hammers' hierarchy are keen to see the team achieve a top four finish soon after the move.

Joint-Chairman David Sullivan has had his say on the deal and welcomed Kouyate to the Club telling whufc.com, "I am absolutely delighted to have clinched the signing of Cheikhou after weeks of tough negotiations that saw us beat off the challenge of some huge clubs across Europe for his signature. He comes with vast experience at the top level - including the Champions League - despite being only 24 and I am sure he will add valuable competition to places".

He added, "we are determined to have a better season this year and this signing is a statement of the direction the Club is heading in. We hope to have at least four more signings in place by the time we kick-off against Tottenham on 16 August as we aim for at least a top-ten finish this season."

Kouyate will be a key asset to Allardyce, as he is 6'4 and Big Sam's previous teams have achieved a lot of success with tall, powerful players.

The midfielder is a Senegalese international and knows Mohamed Diame well, as the former Wigan Athletic player is the captain of his country.

West Ham's new signing has also been a regular on the international scene as he has been capped 11 times.

Having had a consistent midfield last season, it will be hard for Allardyce to break that up but I'm sure he will find a place for the new recruit, as he looks to create a more attacking side next season.
