It's that time of year again when the transfer window opens and although West Ham United manager Sam Allardyce knows he needs to strengthen his squad, I bet he did not expect as many injuries as he got over the Christmas period.

Due to all three centre backs being injured at this moment in time, Allardyce has had to dip into the market already and has managed to acquire the loan signing of Wolverhampton Wanderers central defender Roger Johnson. The question most Hammers' fans have asked themselves is, is he really what we need? In defence of Big Sam, he obviously wanted to get an experienced player in two the club, given that there were two crucial games coming up and the youngsters had been used in Sunday's 5-0 FA Cup third-round defeat to Sky Bet Championship side Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

Johnson has joined until the end of the season and will try to make it third time lucky as the East Londoners battle to keep their Premier League status, as with both Birmingham City and Wolves he has had the unwonted record of being relegated. In the case of his current employers, he has gone down the leagues twice and is now in Ssy Bet League One.

In his pre-match news conference ahead of the trip to Manchester United last month Allardyce updated the fans with the latest news on Winston Reid situation and stated that he was close to a return. Then, of course, the club suffered the loss of their to other centre backs, James Collins and James Tomkins and with such a big game at the Etihad Stadium coming up on Wednesday night I don't think Allardyce would have wanted to risk the young players to fill in that position again.
