West Ham United have been looking for more firepower to add to Andy Carroll's goal threat all summer. However, he has not yet played at all in the current campaign after completing a permanent move to Upton Park, having picked up a heel injury in the 4-2 win against Reading at the end of last season.

Carroll returned to training yesterday but has suffered a fresh injury, with the club saying in a statement that no date has yet been set for his comeback.

With Modibo Maiga currently the only available striking option, manager Sam Allardyce has acquired the services of Mladen Petric on a free transfer until the end of this season.

Last week the club saw a move to re-sign former front-man Carlton Cole fall through because of concerns over his fitness.

Former Fulham striker Petric told the club's official website "I'm very happy, excited and looking forward to training with the team and to the first game.

"I know the Premier League and I'm happy to be back in the Premier League, because it's a fantastic league and I'm really looking forward to being part of this team and this club.

"There are a lot of good players here and I'm happy to be part of such a good team and I hope we can all celebrate my first goal for West Ham as soon as possible.

"I didn't speak to Sam Allardyce until today but I've heard a lot about him and I spoke to Guy Demel, who I know from my time at Hamburg and I'm sure I'll have a good time here.

"I remember playing at West Ham last year and it was a very tough game for us at Fulham. I think we lost 3-0! It's not easy to come here as the away side and take points away."

The Croatian international scored five goals in 23 appearances for Fulham, including one in the Cottagers' 3-1 home victory over the Hammers in January.
Petric will be hoping to make his debut when West Ham face Southampton at St Mary's on Sunday afternoon.
