When Sam Allardyce took over as manager of West Ham United in June 2011, his brief for an initial two-year contract from co-owners David Sullivan and David Gold was to achieve promotion from the npower Champoinship at the first attempt and then to consolidate the Hammers' position in the Barclays Premier League.

He achieved both of these aims and even delivered a top 10 finish last year which was beyond the fans expectations. This achievement was possibly helped by the fact that they didn't face any of the big names early on and this luck seems to have been repeated in the fixtures for the 2013/14 season.

The Hammers will kick-off their second top-flight campaign with a repeat of their opening Championship fixture as newly promoted Cardiff City arrive at Upton Park on August 17.

The East Londoners' first away game sees them return to the scene of one of their away victories last season as they go to St James's Park to come up against former manager Alan Pardew and his Newcastle United side.

The team's first London derby of the season will take place against Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane on October 5 and then Chelsea are due to come to East London on 23 November. They also have London derbies on Boxing Day at home to Arsenal and on New Year's Day away at Fulham.

Before they face the Boxing Day clash with the Gunners, Allardyce's men face Manchester United under the new management of David Moyes at Old Trafford on December 21, with the return fixture scheduled to be played on March 22.

Allardyce will want to make sure he has secured safety in the Premier League before West Ham's last two games of the season, as they face the reverse fixture with Spurs and then Manchester City at the Etihad stadium. Having said that, the last time West Ham travelled on the last day of the season they beat Manchester United to stage a dramatic escape from relegation in 2007; given what they achieved last season who knows what they can pull off in the 2013/14 campaign.
