When the January transfer window first opened West Ham United were involved in a flurry of deals, but since James Collins came off with a hamstring injury in the Barclays Premier League game against Sunderland on 12 January, Sam Allardyce has been desperate to acquire some cover in his defence. It was confirmed on the official website on Monday night that the club have made their fifth signing of the window as Emanuel Pogatetz signed a loan deal until the end of the season.

The news was first reported by German newspaper Bild on Sunday morning and suggestions of a medical in London followed soon after.

The Austrian defender is no stranger to English top-flight football having spent five years at Middlesbrough between 2005 and 2010 and will know current Hammers' midfielder Gary O'Neil from his days at the Riverside Stadium.

Pogatetz could go straight into the squad for Wednesday's game against Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Another piece of business that the manager is hoping to conclude is a deal for Aston Villa defender Steven Warnock. The former Blackburn and Liverpool player looks set to arrive in the next couple of days subject to passing a medical. As for any other names coming through the door at Upton Park on Thursday, anything could happen.
