I can never remember a league fixture being played on the same evening as the transfer deadline. Midway through West Ham United's 5-1 mauling by Ipswich Town at Portman Road last night, back in East London the club confirmed the signing of Manchester United's Ravel Morrison on a three and a half year deal for an undisclosed fee. Later Nicky Maynard joined from Bristol city on a two and a half year deal and shortly after Ricardo Vaz Te signed for the same amount of time but with an option for a further 12 months.

All three players passed medicals on Tuesday afternoon and could make their debuts in the London Derby against Millwall at Upton Park on Saturday lunchtime.

Manager Sam Allardyce said in a pre-match briefing before Christmas that he had 25 names that he would like to persue but only a few names were speculated about, including Huddersfield town's Jordan Rhodes, but despite interest in Rhodes from the Hammers they kept getting their attempts to sign the player rebuffed.

The main priority was achieved, in that he did manage to capture a striker, leaving him with a plethora of players to pick from for the weekend's game.

There had been reports earlier in the month claiming that strikers could also be on their way out of Upton Park, as Allardyce looked to shake up his strike force due to the team not creating enough goals considering the amount of chances they have been creating in matches.

Frederic Piquionne was linked with a small number of clubs throughout January and yesterday a report from talk sport's website claimed that Birmingham city were set to acquire the services of the Frenchman, provided they could sell players to fund a deal. No interest in any of the blues' strikers came to fruition and so a deal didn't happen - perhaps Piquionne will move when the window reopens again in the summer.
