Davenport - It was this or a wheelchair

Calum Davenport has spoken out after his return to the West Ham side after suffering a broken neck last January.

He returned to the side after injuries to the other centre backs left Curbishley with little choice but to recall the former Spurs man.

“In football you never know with injuries and stuff, but if you can get yourself in the right place physically and mentally then you get your chance. I was ready to play," he said to the Waltham Forest Guardian.

The injury to his neck was thankfully not severe enough to end his career and deny him the chance to walk again, but he admits it was a close run thing.

"I broke a vertebra in my neck. But that is not really the problem, it is the actual swelling around your nerve endings which is the dangerous thing.

“It was career threatening. It was touch and go between being as I am now fit and playing, or being in a wheelchair, so obviously it was pretty bad."

Beyond the petty nature of the football fan (we're all guilty of it from time to time) it's always a great moment to see a player step back on to the pitch after such a terrible injury.

He may have his detractors in the stands here and there, but given a run in the side he could be good back up should Anton Ferdinand leave.

Steve. You still let in three goals. Without that we would have won. I only fell over because there was a Hubba Bubba wrapper on my boot.

I'll show you both on Thursday.
