Work in (Pilgrims) Progress.

The Baggies Green Army arrived en masse to do battle with the Plymouth Green Army. Leading the Dublin crew was the hedonistic DublinBaggie and in charge of the Mayo crew was Cost Centre #One, MayoJunior, a seasoned veteran at the Hawthorns. After imbibing a few Bathams and revisiting a few nostalgic stories we all agreed that RdM doesn’t do banana skins so the points were in the bag. It don’t suit us being favourites sang the song in my head.

The ground was bathed in brilliant sunshine and when did anyone ever get sunburnt in West Bromwich? There was a tentative start to the game and the quality of Albion left a lot to be desired. On twelve minutes a long punt up field saw Martis shepherd the attacker with the ball into the penalty area where he was allowed to turn and shoot with the ball trickling past a hapless Carson dive. This silenced the crowd including the up-until-then noisy SME.

Play was scrappy and Albion in the last third were abysmal. A couple of half chances came and went until 34 minutes when a corner glanced of Olsson’s head and Martis lashed it into the net. Game on. A few more exciting moments before the best move of the game saw Cech take the ball in his stride and fire an unstoppable shot into the top corner of the net. The poor start was forgotten and even though Plymouth were well organised [as all Sturrock’s teams are] their players were poor.

Albion started like a train and had two perfectly good looking goals ruled offside. The referee was shockingly bad and the East Stand linesman was on a different planet. One incident right in front of me saw the referee give a throw in despite the ball not leaving the pitch and he glared at the linesman who stubbornly refused to raise his flag. The ridiculous saga of the changed shirts and the clash with Carson’s jersey hardly needs mentioning. The game fairly turned to mush until the 85th minute when Thomas crossed into the box and Cech headed his second goal of the game. His hatrick was on offer seconds later when Woods slid the ball to him but he ballooned the ball over.

Carson 5 – poor for goal and came for one high ball only.

Zuiverloon 6 – ropey start but improved all game.

Olsson 6 – solid.

Martis 7 MoM – very good play [even with the sloppy goal he was involved in].

Mattock 6 – best game I’ve seen him in.

Brunt 5 – slow, lazy and looked either injured or disinterested.

Mulumbu 7 – excellent tackling but his passing should be entitled ‘To Whom It May Concern’.

Dorrans 7 – consistent throughout whole game and looked to push forward.

Cech 7 – took his goals well and should have had four.

Cox 5 – poor all round display.

Bednar 6 – good effort but no end product.

Koren 6 – never really got to the pace of the game.

Thomas 6 – created third goal.

Woods 6 – looked good in his cameo appearance.
