Did you have to sit down and put your hand up to be served?

No just the usual social distancing stuff and a one way system through the pub.

Not ideal but itís a start 😁.

In the latter years of my drinking I only ever drank real ale. Never wine or spirits or rats, bats, cats and gnats pŪss fizz lager. Brakspears and Tribute being just two of my faves. Thatís one of the few good things about todayís pubs. Loads of great beers to choose from if you can afford them instead of just bleediní Watneyís Red Barrel.

I agree Deebo, I love real ale.

One of my favs is Ringwood 49íer, I have a few of those before Pompey games, takes the edge off Jackettball 😎.

My all time favourite is Boltmaker, brewed by Timothy Tailor in Keighley Yorkshire. You donít often see that on draught down here, you usually see their ĎLandlordí, which is still good but not as good as Boltmaker.

If itís hot weather I tend to drink IPA, which is OK chilled. Obviously most real ales are better at Ďroomí temperature and donít chill well.

Iíve got a thirst in now just thinking about it 😁.

Litrally until about 6 months ago beer was just beer to me.
They all tasted the same about from Stella, which had a stronger flavour (which I didn't take too).

I was brought 8 bottles of IPA 2 years ago for doing someone a favour and threw out 7 of them cos it was rank.

But I think in the last few years I've reached the golden age. Either I've mullered my taste buds or the boredom of not leaving the house, I'm appreciating the delicate differences of beer. I've made it a thing to try all kinds of IPA, and I'm enjoying them.

Gotta be the only good thing about nearing 40

V4P, you mentioning Ďrankí ale reminds me of a time when I went into the old British Flag pub in Eastney. It was my brotherís fav pub, he is a real ĎWatneyís Red Barrelí type 😁.

I noticed they had one real ale pump, so I asked for a pint of that, it tasted absolutely vile. I told the landlord it was off and he said he was going to stop selling it because everyone complained about it. He obviously had no idea how to keep it, and not enough of his customers were real ale drinkers.

I love going to Germany and the Czech Republic for beer, all their beer is the proper stuff, no preservatives, just pure ingredients - nectar. You never get any kind of hangover from it either 😁.

You mentioned Stella. In my younger days, I had a skinful of that and woke up draped over the back of the settee with the worst hangover of my life. I was also surrounded by packets of Knorr soup, to this day I donít know where they came from.

Never again 😎.

Mikey, I forgot about Brains SA. I remember big signs in Cardiff proclaiming ĎItís Brains you wantí 😁.

Yes SA is a great pint, despite the fact they reduced the alcohol content a while back.

Badger ales, for me.

Champion Gold and Hopping Hare.

Bang into 49er!

The French are getting into artisan ales too. Some very good stuff being produced over here. Never thought I'd see the day. Farking pricey though!

Gaff. I never saw the point of beers being too strong. Always preferred a long slow session on the weak but real stuff myself. When I lived in the Island Burts fitted the bill for me. About 3% it were. Made from spring water. You could drink gallons of the stuff and wake up next day feeling fine. I live not too far from the Wye Valley now so we get a few of their beers here. Light and hoppy and unusual delicate flavours refreshing and nice but you wouldnt want too many. Doningtons is near here as well. Like most real ales it depends on how it is kept. Get a good landlord and they can transform a brew from rats to nectar. Loverly. I have noticed people drink much more slowly up here btw. The lot I meet up with from the island are always in a rush and slug it dowm without letting the flavour buds do their thing. [?]

Cunning, yes Iím quite partial to Badger Ales too. 😁

As for Ďartisan alesí everyone is at it now. I was in Canada a couple of years back and spent some time in Winnipeg. There was a nice little brewery called the ĎLittle Brown Jugí, they only had a couple of beers but they were very nice.

Deebo, yes the Wye Valley is very pleasant isnít it?

I see where you are coming from with the beer strength thing, but beers less than 4 are a bit lacking in body for me.

If Iím out for a session with the lads I try to stick with 4 percent beers, if Iím just out for a couple I raise that up a bit. I donít like beers that are too strong, they are not as enjoyable and the taste suffers.

49 er is one of those beers that goes down a treat, and it doesnít seem like itís 4.9 (until you step outside the pub and realise you are a bit more trashed than anticipated). 😁

Itís all down to individual taste of course 😁

Last year when I was in Virginia at Fort Monroe there is a craft brewery called Oozlefinches. I donít drink any more so can't report on the flavour but the lot I was with got taster trays of seven very small glasses on a wooden platter thing. I like the idea of that for starters.

Yes Iíve seen those Deebo.

My trouble is that I find one I really like them stick with that one. Itís like beer festivals, I sample until I find a really good one and thatís me for the rest of the festival.

I have given up everything except alcohol, not sure I could ever give that one up. I have cut down drastically though, but if a lightweight these days 😁.
