The American basketball player who died

In a helicopter crash that the media are giving saturation coverage.

Am I the only one who has never heard of him before this tragedy?

Iíve heard of Michael Jordon, but not Kobi until today.
Perhaps it gathered headlines because of the manner of his death?
Just like the unheard-of Nantes player whose plane went down in the Channel.

Heard of him and would have been able to tell you he was a great basketball player without ever watching a basketball match. Given the popularity of nba in the USA then I imagine he was a national hero over there. Certainly a very sad story however you look at it, whether he was famous or not, a family have just lost their father and daughter [sad]

I've heard of him but I know fuuck all and have no interest in basketball. It's horrific and an absolute tragedy for all the families concerned, unfortunately the press just love a horrific tragedy

He's the Ronaldinho of Basketball, following the Michael Jordan days. LeBron James is your modern day Ronaldo.

Vaguely heard the name because of the saturation of American 'culture' all over the internet, but I couldn't even have told you he was a sportsman.

Isaac-Hunt, famous people die in air crashes, but there is no or little mention of other people that have sadly died with them. The Munich air crash, the Leicester City chairman, Buddy Holly etc. Its the name of the game I am afraid!

The man was known worldwide and up until the day before he died was number three in the all time scorers in NBA history. Whether or not youíre a fan of basketball, he was one of the greatest ever sportsmen. 20 years at the same club and an absolute legend. Could I have picked him out in a lineup? Probably not. But, he was at the top his entire career and one of the most well known and popular players around. Itís a big loss, but the others that died too makes it all the more tragic. In footballing terms heíd be the equivalent of Ronaldo, and I donít mean the fake rape claims they both faced..

Known to basketball fans worldwide, maybe. The rest - even fans of sport - couldn't give one nor could they about "NBA history"
A classic case of 'legend in his own lunchtime' the proverbial lunchtime being the tiny world of American consciousness.

Apparently one of the worst shot conversion records in the history of NBA, his greed caused countless rifts with team mates. Not forgetting the rape issue. But letís carry on the mutual mast urba tion. RIP all who died (collectively)

I canít stand basketball, like I said, you donít have to care about basketball, but he was one of the greatest. I can appreciate a true star, shame others canít fathom what people are trying to say about him. You donít have to like the sport, but he was a superstar

Why is it OTT though? Internationally famous sportsman dies in helicopter crash, along with his daughter, her teammates, their parents and coach, itís pretty relevant news. If it were Tiger Woods, itíd be the same, if it were Ronaldo or Beckham, itíd be the same.

Soul_To_Squeeze, because I & by the look of it many others have never ever heard of him. Basketball is hugely popular in the states but over here??
Its worth a mention on the news but far bigger stories out there concerning UK.
Do you think it would be headline news in the States if Ben Stokes died in a chopper crash?

Except, if Tiger Woods died I doubt the countrys largest tv broadcaster would use footage of Phil Mickelson when reporting the ďinternationalĒ superstars death. Clearly a lot of people didnít have a Scooby who he was. Basketball ainít all that in the UK. When Jonah Lomu died, I donít recall a similar manhandling of spunk trumpets as is going on now.

Is it really that much of an issue if its getting some coverage over here? I mean I'd rather hear about this and learn about why he is so loved in the US than hear brexit mentioned every other word! If there was some huge story happening in the UK somewhere that was getting no coverage due to the Bryant story then I'd be inclined to agree. But for now, I don't really see the issue.

Never really understood why basketball is so popular, load of very tall geezers plonking a ball into a basket.

As for the blanket coverage, itís obviously a tragic event but doesnít warrant the saturation coverage.

PFC, if you are really more interested in this than the independence of your country your priorities are in the wrong place. The bloke may well have been a really nice man but at the end of the day he was a sportsman.

On a slightly different tack, even if I was stinking rich I wouldnít use a helicopter.

Iím staying in a hotel for a few days and have been watching a bit of Ďmainstreamí tv news. Iíve binned it all at home, so thought Iíd see if it has got any better.

Surprise, surprise, itís actually WORSE.

No wonder so many of you are brainwashed, if you watch that rubbish every day ffs 😎.

The coverage of the baseball geezer makes it seem like he was the second coming or something. He was a basketball player ffs and his death, while tragic, is no more tragic than all the other people who die every day.

I wonít be watching mainstream news again thatís for sure.
