So much more balanced with out him in team. Probably our beat team we could put out. Need to replace ragget but the team out today would put up a promotion push.

Then comes on for ten minutes and the middle of the pitch is lost for rest of game inviting pressure on our selfs!

Watched the game on Bet365 from Italy. when Close came on I said oh no to my mates, we have a gang of 5 Pompey supporters 4 Italian and they have all been to Fratton (initiation ceremony) here in Bergamo. We were waiting for a Coventry to come but we held on.

Another thing we are mulling over, Pompey scoring from set play? Fighting hard in the second half and winning away. Many great things today away from home.

Dan Butler-constantly slated
Jed Wallace - slagged rotten, non league at best
Adam Webster- a bit slow and naive.
Brandon Haunstrup- never be good enough.
Ben Close- Total rubbish waste of space
Jack Whatmough- the best defender there has ever been despite never lasting more than half a season.
The analysis of our home grown youngsters over the last couple of years has been absolute genius.

Maybe your analysis.

Wallace - regularly awarded MoM
Webster - played at right back despite being a centre half. When moved to his correct position was outstanding.
Haunstrup - don't recall any criticism.
Close - simply not very good but Jackett sees something no one else can fathom.
Whatmough - an injury proned terrific centre half.

Err.....what's your point?

Love to know where you got that info PSB, even better if you can prove it?
BTW the only one on your list I'd agree with is Close.

Good point about set plays CMM - he won;t get any credit but Ragget and Burgess together are a real handful from corners.

We have been fed a diet of mechanical plodderball for so many decades now, we have reared a generation that doesn't know what they are taking about and have a go at technically gifted players because they don't run around and hatchet people to compensate for their lack of footballing ability, like what they're used to.

Got to say there are so many divided opinions regarding Close we ought to call him Marmite you either love him or hate him. Me I am no expert all I know is we get over run in midfield which puts pressure on our defence and at the same time we cannot spring good attacking moves. Whether this is necessarily Close or Naylor or the two combined all I know is Ben Thompson knocks spots off the two of them.

The solution would be to play him further forward seeing as he is an attacking midfielder. How Kenny hasn't figured that out based on his scoring record I have no idea. Then again Kenny likes to have his players out of position.

I donít think Close is a bad player just not the Pompey Messi some see him as. I think his erratic form is down to KJ for constantly playing him out of position. Anyone who watches Pompey regularly knows Close is a final third midfielder. An average L1 midfielder IMO

I don't know anyone who thinks he is Messi. Most around me think he is the worst player to ever player football. You're right in that he is a final 3rd player, if he plays further forward then we can play someone in front of the defence who is competent in a defensive role. Then again a lot around me also thought the same about Webster. The guy who used to stand behind me until recently doubled down on his assessment of Webster constantly.

I'm starting to get the impression that we as a collective aren't that good at judging the talent of players.

Quite right Ravo.

I know lots of people who didnít rate Webster, I think heís a great player.

A lot of it is down to opinion of course but a lot of it is a genuine lack of football knowledge. People who have never played the game, in any real sense, tend to value running around a lot more than positional sense. They ball watch and donít see what players do when they donít have the ball.

They donít see the forward taking a couple of steps back to get space, or the runs to take people away, or the organisation of a back four.

It takes all sorts and all fans are welcome but it is just as well that most of them have no influence on team selection 😁.

We all think our judgement is perfect. However I think it requires a bit more observation from on onlookers to spot someone who constantly goes missing ,rather than seeing a missed open goal or a misplaced pass. That's why I always make myself available to offer help in the North Stand Upper for those fortunate enough to sit near me.

All of those players have been slated on here many many times by numerous individuals . I donít have the know how to go way back and find the proof but they have. Close is technically more gifted by a country mile than our current captain but will never get any praise for being so. Whatmough hasnít proved himself at any length to be called a terrific player. When these players go on to other league clubs people say ď we should of kept him, typical pompeyĒ but all the time they are playing for their hometown club they are ďnot good enough, will never make it, too small, need to go on loan to Havant and waterlooville ď .

I have always felt he is far too light weight for midfield, especially at this level. 99% of his passes go sideways or backwards yet some around me have a go if anyone moans at or about him. Really think he weakens the team as others have to pick up the slack.
