So we're 1 nil up no subs made under increased pressure

Then Jacksh1it makes 2 subs within 3 minutes of them levelling.

Shameful schoolboy level of management.

And i'll say this regardless if we win or lose from this point onwards

Total lack of grasp of tactics as per usual.

Subs should have been made much earlier.

No good waiting for them to score then react in the 83rd minute.

Why the heíll couldnít Jackett see that Evans was knackered in the second half is beyond me. The guy is so tactically inept. Every manager should be made to answer questions from the fans every week in a live phone in. My question would be is why when we go a goal in front why do we then sped the rest of the game trying to defend that goal.

First we sit back and take an age to get into the game. Then we start to operate in their box. Eventually, we might get a goal. Fantastic. The opposition are in retreat, their fans restless. The opposition are all over the place.

From that point on (regardless of time left), pompey sit back and cease anything but a passing interest in adding to the score. The opposition suddenly look a force, their fans awake again and every Pompey player is back behind the ball.

Jackett stands there, arms folded, inanimate. Pompey fans are watching the clock thinking are we going to get away with it this time? The subs watch on, scratching their bollards, as their teammates are doing last ditch tackles to prevent an equaliser. Inevitably, a big chance for the opponent turns up and, depending on our good fortune that day, it's an equaliser or not. If it's the equaliser, suddenly you see pompey back attacking, even the subs bench stops playing sudoku as one thinks he might possibly get to play in place of anyone other than Ben Close. It's still only a definite a sub if we lose another goal though.

Sometimes we score again (hooray!) but it's soon back to defending for our lives. If we haven't scored, the drawbridge is attempted to be pulled up.

This is jacketball. Trying to win games by the odd goal, regardless of how krap the opposition are or how well we are playing. You've got a vague chance of winning games if you've got a £2 million defender (Clarke), a decent midfielder (Thompson) and a decent attacking presence (Lowe and Curtis). It's a lot more difficult when they are replaced by loans or free transfers, or players that must have played against us in the last six months. It's negative and it's fecking terrible to watch. 20 points lost this season from winning positions or in last 10 mins. Inviting pressure does not fecking work with this team, but jackett still keeps plugging away like someone that doesn't want to go up.

And then I read in the news that jackett wants to emulate the success of his summer signings.

I know we aren't going up, and this is a long, pointless posting, but in such a krap league, it's painful to watch for another season.

Took my wife first time this season.
She asked if there was new tactics not to shoot lol.

Then she said why is No 22 playing he isn't doing anything near the goal.Had to explain how Jacket likes to use him ..high ball which he tries to head to team mate...That's stupid she said. He(jacket ) needs to change his tactics like cook had to.

Please tell me he didnít say that? Emulate the summer success... so he wants to sign some permanently injured and largely useless players!

Itís been EIGHT YEARS since weíve got to watch Pompey in the championship. FŁcking ridiculous! Looking highly likely itís going to be at least 9 at this rate.

The thing is though, this is such a sh;t league this year, itís not going to take much to walk it. Maybe Rotherham will begin to stretch their legs now? Who knows?

Maybe weíll string some wins together? Anybodyís guess. We donít have the defenders to sit on a 2 goal lead, let alone a single goal. Either the players, tactics or manager needs to change for us to improve. One thing thatís for sure is it canít stay as it is.

He, somehow, largely gets away with it at home. Away from home, you just need to look at the stats. Won 2 out of 11 or 12 games. Picked up only 9 or 10 puts. Itís impressive that we are anyway near being in contention. All hail mediocrity.

Games in front and surrendered a lead;

Sunderland away - 1-0 lost 2-1 - 27 min equaliser and 39 winner - 3 points
Coventry home - 3-1 drew 3-3 - 75 min & 86 min equaliser - 2 points
Blackpool away - 1-0 drew 1-1 - 58 min equaliser - 2 points
Bristol R away - 2-0 drew 2-2 - 78 min & 93 min equaliser - 2 points
Oxford Utd home - 1-0 drew 1-1 - 90 min equaliser - 2 points
Peterborough home - 2-1 drew 2-2 - 72 min equaliser - 2 points
Accrington away - 1-0 lost 4-1 - 44 min equaliser - 3 points
Gillingham away - 1-0 drew 1-1 - 80 min equaliser - 2 points

Games held on to a 1 goal lead;
Bolton W home - 1-0
Lincoln C home - 1-0
Doncaster away - 2-1 (did surrender a lead in 82nd min..but got a 91st min winner)
Rotherham home - 3-2
Ipswich T home - 1-0

So to-date we've held on to a one goal lead 5 times out of 13 (38%).

We've had a 2 goal lead 6 times and won 4 of them (67%)
Tranmere
Coventry
Bristol rovers
Rochdale
Southend
Wycombe

I wonder how low the percentage for holding on to a lead has to drop before there is conscious decision made to be bolder and look for that second goal, where the win percentage greatly increases, rather than to try and protect what we have?

Edited for the Accrington game - thanks for pointing it out

Interesting Peter. It seems obvious to all except the one that matters that sitting back to defend a lead is costing us dear.

I would have thought any fan could have predicted that Evans might run out of steam bout the 60th minute and have someone ready to go on in his place. Playing number ten in our set up is very hard work for anyone. And any fan knows that our defence is not good enough to sit deep, yet we do it week in week out.

I believe we get driven deeper because Close, match after match, goes missing in action when we're under pressure.

The back 4 drop off first. Close drops to cut the gap between the defence and midfield. He is a symptom of Jacketts tactics not the cause of our erratic form and ugly style.

All irrelevant however as Close should be in number 10 where he can create and score, not locked in a defensive role.

Edited.

Well Close has been played as a central mid-fielder for a season and a half now, remember he replaced Ben Thompson when he returned to Millwall. If the manager can't see how he performs there in this key position after all this time, no wonder we struggle to get promoted.

Close isn't that sort of midfielder unfortunately as we have all known for ages. Ben Thompson is more akin to what Danny Rose was (midfield engine who can do a bit of everything), and I'd say Cannon is the closest we have to him at the moment. He definitely isn't a goal scorer or creative mid you on;y have to look at the 6 goals in his entire career to see that.

Close is a goal scoring midfielder, case in point he was literally our top scorer in all competitions in 2019 with 14. It would seem logical to anyone with eyes to push him forward into the number 10 role where he played coming through the academy outscoring Conor Chaplin most seasons in the process.

Great Post Stubs & reckon you're Mrs could do a far better job that KJ! The Snooze used to run a feature Manager for the day maybe she could have a go at that then forward to the club.

Yes, I also mentioned on another thread that our strongest team would probably have Naylor & McCrorie as the holding 2 and Cannon or Close as the attacking midfielder.

The alternative is to play 433 depending on where you want Close to operate.

I'd go Cannon and Naylor with Close in front of them two. McCrorie flatters to deceive IMHO.
