My first live game since end of last season and I was a little shocked at how bad we actually were - we are in for a long hard relegation fight unless we improve. A bit dramatic but we were that poor.

My thoughts
1. Raggett is no footballer even if he had any confidence - whoever scouted him should be fired and shows why moneyball has been so successful -
2. Burgess is our best defender - depressing but true - honest and brave and there for the season but limited
3. Pitman needs to be axed - clearly our best goal scorer but we have no pace or energy in the 10 position - Close could do that job
4. Close gets abuse on here - for me he is an decent League 1 player and the least of our issues
5. Harness is a potential star - we will get a lot of cash for him at some point. Went looking for the ball which I particularly liked
6. Marquis was much better than I thought - he and Harness drove everything in 2nd half - needs service. Really liked his jinky run - he over-ran it and the keeper was favourite but he didn't pull out, he went through him
7. Curtis - it doesn't help him when fans abuse him - he was awful and Jackett needs to take him out of the firing line for a few weeks. We know he has a part to play if he gets his form back
8. Naylor should definitely be captain - his passing is inconsistent but he is a warrior - played final quarter on one leg
9. Jackett needs to consider changing formation - Naylor needs to sit in front of CBs to protect and just sit there as we are too weak in defence
10. We need more pace and energy in the team but the passing needs to be much faster - it was so slow yesterday that the receiver was closed down by the time the ball got there.

For what it's worth my ratings:
McG 6 nothing to do
Bolton 6 did ok nothing more
Burgess 7 MOM for me. At least he tries to command and do something with the ball.
Raggett 4 not as bad as first appearance but clearly not up to much.
Haunstrupp 6 least of our worries at the moment.
Naylor 6 hard worker but needs some quality around him.
Close 5 Totally out of form. Shooting a joke since first couple of weeks of the season.
Williams 4 Have hopes for him but yesterday never beat his man.
Pitman 4 scored, missed a pen but generally that role is beyond him at his pace.
Marquis 6 I still believe he can come good if Harness can start supplying him with some decent ball.
Curtis 3 A total disaster at the moment. Needs a month off. Go home and forget about football for a few weeks.
Harness 7 Easily most dangerous player.

Begs the questions though:summer recruitment can't have been much good when McRorie can't get in team, centre-backs are poor, Bolton no great shakes, Harrison can't get in the team. What's going on with our scouting network?

We're not XXXXXXed at all. The alternative is to encourage and improve the players we've got, something Jackett has been good at in the past.

Actually all we have to is get some confidence back and get everyone playing to the level they were playing at last season at whichever club they were at. If Jackett is the problem then this team would imprive immediately if he left, but I'm not convinced it is that simple - I think it is more to do with the players at the moment.

Stopping ceaseless tinkering would be a huge step forward. He is more clueless about his best side and formation than at the start of the season. No wonder the players are playing badly and lack confidence - they don't know if they are on their arśes or elbows. And that is the responsibility of the manager. What else is he there for other than team selection, tactics and motivation.

Admire your optimism Ghost Jacket has had all preseason plus the amount of games we have played already to get things right, do you honestly think he is going to manage that now?

IMO the fans discontent is exacerbated by the league position, and the players lack of confidence is mostly due the the league position and the fans discontent. But we are in a false position. Without missing the three games due to the Victorious festival, Bury going bust & a poor decison to postpone against Southend I am sure we would be much higher up the league and talking about a slighty slow start rather than a potential manager-sacking crisis.

Those three blank weekends have made it a stop/start season and prevented any consistency developing. Its not unreasonable to think we would have got 6 points from those three games and be in the top ten within three or four points of the play-offs with 36 games to play.

I repeat my comment of last week. How long do we give Marquis to start scoring goals ?
Someone called solent to say Marquis should have been MOM ffs
Need to play Harrison with Pitman.
Certainly Marquis and Pitman aint working. They didn't even shake hands at the end the match.

BTW did you see Eisa and Toney 8 goals apiece for Peterborough...if only

Marquis was easily the man of the match yesterday,he never stopped running for 90 minutes

I thought marquis was clearly man of the match yesterday for us. Harness had a decent second half and naylor was his usual self. Apart from that I don't think anyone done anything. Marquis is having to drop off and pull wide because we are giving him no service. He created a couple of chances himself and hassled their defence well. I'd rather seen marquis and Harrison given a go together rather than pitman and Harrison.

I'm sure there's something in that. I think we have players who can't get on with others. No team spirit.

This thread is comedy gold.

You all seem to think that by far our best forward is only worth 4 out of 10, despite the fact that he’s the only one who knows where the goal is. OK he missed a pen but the best players do that occasionally. There is nobody in our squad who would have scored that header apart from him, a true striker’s goal.

The glaring deficiency is in midfield where we lack speed of thought and creativity. The fact that someone thinks Close would provide energy in the No 10 role is laughable. He’s OK on the ball but he doesn’t know how to win it and the game bypasses him most of the time.

The game doesn’t require running around like headless chickens, you have to use your brain too. Pitman does that, too bad a lot of you can’t see it.

Just a hint for the more myopic amongst you, try watching what happens off the ball. Most of you seem to have the classic ‘ball watching’ malaise. The game is all about getting into space, taking a step back to give you room in the box and generally thinking.

All professional players are fit and can run around a lot, if that was the only requirement all teams would be equal.

The fact that they are not should tell you something.

Close may look alright with Fernandinho enforcing midfield and that was 'may'!
It's not his fault Kenny keeps picking him but sooner or later Kenny will lose his job and close will be told to man up and start winning or get himself another poor league 1 or 2 side to play for. He has a lot of potential but frankly has so many deficiencies it's staggering that he gets near the side

Ghost, name for me one player Jackett has improved????

We’re obviously disappointed with the league position but the reason we’re pi$$ed off is because of KJs style of play, his lack of improvement in the summer especially in defence.

His insistence on playing players in the wrong roles

His insistence in playing Close as a DM

Many others but I can’t be ar$ed. Jackett needs to go now so we can salvage the season. His league wins record since 1/1/19 is abysmal

Gaffer
As I said Pitman is our best goal scorer, my assertion is that we would be a much better team without him. He can’t play number 10 - penalty miss was irrelevant to me.

He could play number 10 alongside Oli. If Oli was fit and not required to play in defence.

So let’s get this straight:

You ‘assert’ that a team will be ‘much better’ without the man you freely admit is their best goalscorer.

Is your name Jackett by any chance? 😁

The taxi is on it’s way, should be with you soon.

Bluetag ...

I give you Craig McGillivray, Jack Whatmough, Matt Clarke, Ben Close, Ollie Hawkins, Ronan Curtis amd most of all Jamal Lowe as players that Jackett has improved. It's what his reputation has been at all his clubs, signing players like McGillivray & Hawkins with no previous success at that level and turning them into something. Lowe was not one of his signings but the way he kept him in the team in his first season when many on here were baying for him to be left out was typical Jackett. He had seen the potential in the player and was prepared to play the long game and stick with him because he knew he would come through. He's done and is doing again the same with Close & Curtis to some extent, even if both are desperately out of form at the moment.

He will live or die by whether he can restore the confidence of a squad that has totally lost confidenceand whether this summer's signings come good or not. So far it looks like they will not, except for Harness and maybe Williams, but it is still early days. He has not got long - if there is no improvement in October then he should go.

Whatmough, Clarke & Lowe were already here & in the 1st two's case were already decent players. Lowe-maybe but I just saw that as a natural progression for a player who as he got fitter being @ a professional club it brought his natural talent out. So in short not sure KJ can claim any credit for those.
Curtis-well he started off great but seems to be right off the boil so not a great example DB. Hawkins-yes & McGillivray. But lets not paint KJ to be a master of the art of football management-he clearly isn't & is tactically a dinosaur. Plus his signings in the summer to shore up the defence have thus far proved completely inadequate.

Whatmough & Clarke were indeed already here and already decent. But you can still improve players like that, and they improved. Nothing to do with tactics, I'd agree that's not always a strength, but lets give credit where it is due and choosing & developing players has been good. Until this summer's intake it would seem if they do not turn it round quickly.

I disagree Deep, non of the players have improved under Jackett skill wise in fact it could be said Curtis has gone backwards. The only player who has gone from poor to average is Ben Close du to the the amount of games Kenny gives him. Clarke was good when we got him so was What’s , McG Evans, . I also think McGee would disagree with you

one thing about yesterday, Bolton got a draw against both Oxford and Sunderland, so they might be a bit better than we are giving them (and Pompey) credit for.
