Superb, 90 minute box to box performance tonight. So similar to everything good that Ben Thompson did last season. Has a very good first touch and will create a lot of chances. Iíll be amazed and disappointed if he isnít a shoe in for Saturday.

I thought he had a very dynamic performance and looked a real class act on the ball after a shoddy first 15 minutes. Not sure he can tackle though and with Close in there too, that might make us vulnerable against a better team.

I hope Iím wrong but If Cannon becomes anywhere near as good for us as Ben Thomson was Iíll eat my hat .He seems to bottle out of every near 50/50 tackle and tonight was against kids

Hmm. Kids who weren't afraid to leave a foot in!

I'd prefer Cannon to Close any day of the week. Still yet to be convinced by the latter despite an eye for goal.

I liked early glimpses of Cannon. He tried hard to get in and around the box today too.
Can only see him improve.

A decent performance against kids but let's see if he can do it when it counts but he'll probably get injured for the season anyway.

The problem is the system, I don't believe you can play Cannon and Close in the same team when Marquis returns in a 4231

Not really seen him play - apart from the Havant game - but was in the pub for most of that.

Maybe we need to re-consider our number 10

Have to disagree. Gave the ball away constantly. Got into the box 2-3 times and was too slow and chose the wrong option.

He will have to improve massively to break into the team based on that performance.

Ben Thompson he isn't! Although they are the same age.

Cannon played well and offers something different in that position with the work he gets through, 10x more energy than Evans and Pitman can muster, if not as much direct goal threat.

Also, if you donít rate Close youíve got rocks in your head. Thereís a reason heís always excellent against higher-level opposition, heís got natural quality.

And another positive mention for Brown, he gets so much unwarranted criticism. A huge threat going forward.

Just finished watching some highlights back. The TV coverage doesn't appear to have done Canon justice, I can full well see why people may feel they were watching a different game!

The finished article, he isn't but he has something about him. Not sure he is going to get many opportunities to improve though. The competition is pretty strong.

Seemed to run around like a blue-XXXXXXd fly with very little purpose. Confirmed previous impression that he is a poor passer and a reckless tackler who will cost us dear.

Footballing opinions amaze me. How people can see it so differently, I thought Cannon looked ordinary at best and then someone else is comparing him to a guy who would of got promoted single handedly last year.
the again this is a forum with a guy who thinks its cool to tell everyone he went to a football game and stayed in the pub.

Watched the whole game on tv and I thought Cannon looked very lively without a lot of impact. Just charged about really. Still crying out for a decent number 10, Paul Walsh/Claridge type player, but at this level it's going to be hard to find.

Whatever your thoughts on Cannon's performance last night which was for me pretty good he's only just still finding his feet after a series of injuries and surely must command our support when given the chance.

As the OP I fully agree with that. I watched it again at home last night and he didnít look as good as he did in the flesh. What TV didnít seem to pick up was his energy and desire for the ball. Iíll tweak my opinion of him in that with time and a decent run in the side he *could* potentially be this seasons Thompson.

We all know you see a different game on TV.

But what also makes a huge difference is if you can "read" the game, which is a skill that you only have if you've played 11v11.

Read the modern game that is. I was a brilliant reader of 2-3-5 the days when number 10 was inside left.Feck knows what his position is now.

I think if Cannon played in one of the two holding midfield positions and Close played in the number 10 role both would be a lot more effective.

Itíll be interesting on Saturday to see if Harrison is Ď in the holeí and Marquis is the striker or he sticks with Harrison up front

Perhaps we won't be having a No10 then, but 2 No8's, from what Joe Gallen is saying.

Cannon and Close on Saturday?

Looks like Harrison or Marquis

And Naylor or McCrorie will sometimes need to be able to play a No8 role.

At least we will have more than one system.

I can remember Ben Thompsonís first few games and thought although full of running he was bottling out of challenges and seemed to pass sideways. Obviously he grew into the role as players around him got to know him and he them and ended up as a terrific asset as we all know. Not saying cannon will be the same but who knows.

Remember one of the reasons Harris loaned Ben to us was he wasn't cutting it in the Championship so KJ and team coached him when he was with us and helped him turn the corner. So my point is perhaps this can happen to Cannon as the raw product is definately there would be great if that's the case.

Andy Cannon this seasons Ben Thompson, more like Wes Fogden! Cannon will run all day for you, but at the end of the day he wasn't doing spectacular 40 yard passes, breaking up attacks, and dictating the play. He seems alright and will become a better player in time as long as injuries don't hinder him, but Ben Thompson he aint.
