Seems strange this Pompey fan has never been given the love afforded to Jack and Connor Chaplin.

I was a critic at the begining of last season but hes won me over and is the best passer in the squad. I think. He lost his place last saturday but i think that will be the making of him and he will end this season as player of the year

He's the only one out of those 3 who is actually from Portsea Island as well.

For me it's because he emerged at about the same time as Adam May, playing the same position, and both were tarred with the same brush. "Close and May FFS" and so on. I was guilty. As it turned out May lived up to that but Close has gone on to become half decent.

Unfortunately for Close, he cannot tackle and will never be a player who can. He also too often appears to go missing when teams attack us. Pompey fans do love a bloke who steams into a tackle and quite often ignores a good passer of the ball, which Close obviously is.

Never understood the Jack love-in. Always injured and slow as XXXXXX. Will never make it above L1.

hm, never tackles. Neither did Glenn Hoddle.

Spurs built a team around Hoddle, and he played in and around an old style midfield four, so tackling was not his brief.

robert prosinecki didnt tackle, track back or even run. but he absolutely stank of awesomeness.

Maybe a little early to compare ben close to that Croatian brautiful specimen tho

Any comparison to Prosinecki is obviously over the top, but passing the ball is his game and it's true that many Pompey fans seem to be obsessed with crunching tackle-style midfielders. Ben is a local boy, lifelong fan and keeps the midfield ticking over. If we want to play a more possession-based game he's the one to make that happen.

Passing is not his game. He passes sideways or backwards and into touch twice on Tuesday. His main points are heís always available, has an eye for a goal and is a bit of a harrier.

There was a rendition of 'he's one of our own' on Tuesday night, long time coming though.

Assume you're joking? Scholes was arguably the best English midfielder of the last 20yrs.

He was, and yet our England managers at the time built the team around Gerard and lampard who couldn't play together - but possibly managed 80 games together in the centre of the park. Hell, we've had just sh!!te managers for the national side.

Close is not a good tackler but is good defensively because of his positioning ,reading of the game and closing down which is why he is in the team alongside Naylor who does the tackling.

But he will be better utilised further forward where his excellent passing skill can do more damage.

IMO he is only just short of the quality that says build a team around him. But it won't be long if he keeps on developing.

Ben Close is played in a position were a certain amount of tackling and bottle is required. These are not Ben's attributes.
I think he should be played in the middle of the three behind the striker to link up play and utilise his passing ability and eye for goal.
The guy is a Pompey fan and seems to get a unjustifiable amount of stick.
