Very sad, looking at the current position of the Geo Ocean III which is above the crash site you can see when you zoom out that the pilot has ditched in the middle of a busy shipping lane to try and increase the chances that they would have been seen.

Makes you think the pilot and his passenger felt they had a chance of being rescued

Link: Zoom out and you'll see all the other ships nearby

Wayno, in a previous life I flew search & rescue helicopters and even with infra red equipment onboard it was never straightforward finding wreckage when Jaguar and Tornado pilots regularly flew themselves into hills and mountains (they'd usually burnt themselves out by the time we arrived). For a ship to see a light aircraft hit the waves at night during bad weather would be nigh on impossible and their radars wouldn't necessarily pick that up.

This is a sad incident that should never have happened if whoever booked the aircraft had first checked on the qualifications the pilot possessed and whether he was current. From what's been discussed on forums such as PPRuNe, it seems that there are a lot of private pilots who aren't strictly allowed to fly paying passengers advertising their services on websites such as Wingly. The overriding rumour is that Sala's flight was booked that way. Hope it's not true.

Scottsdale with respect, it has been widely reported that the aircraft was ruled unfit for take off three times before the flight was sanctioned.

I think implied criticism of the pilot's skills are unfair.

Interesting insight from your experiences flying helicopters though [^]

Sala will be remembered at the match between Caen and Nantes, next Wednesday.

The only fitting matchday commemoration, in my opinion. He played for both clubs.

Agreed Cunny, although in this day and age I accept there will probably be a minute's silence at all grounds this weekend. After that they should all leave well alone and leave it to the family to grieve privately.
