Talking about Fratton, sounds like it's going to be tweaks and gradual improvement over many years unless something crops up that is too good to resist. A gradual increase in capacity depending on demand. Not very exciting and a bit of a let down imho.

They bought the club for a song, so hardly in dire straits to get their money back. That said , in the last 3 years are well in the black according to a poster on here about 1 month ago. I would say that the ground is of primary importance whether it be staying or moving and a bit here and there just doesn't cut it . I thought this was the reason it was "sold" to them as people were saying the supporters model couldn't finance the required improvements required?

You look at the numbers and everything we've done including this season could have been done under the PST.

We would have needed to have taken a decent loan for the Milton End repairs but even servicing that loan at market rates would have been more than doable.

I voted in favour of Eisner's deal on the basis they would do something the PST could not - redevelop Fratton Park.

We are well overdue a meaningful update on this now, and if they think the questions about this are bad now, wait until we're in the Championship without a prayer of getting promoted upwards out of it. Our full attention will be on the ground...

If anyone else has listened to the show they might have a different take on it but it sounded to me like it was going to be slow, steady improvements. Eric Eisner actually said it's a case of "build it and will they come". So they want to see what demand is like in the future. That doesn't sound to me like a stadium rebuild or even a significant increase in capacity but hopefully I'm wrong about it.

Because that's the way it sounded. I'm not saying they aren't going to increase the capacity but it certainly didn't sound like they were in any great hurry to do so. They mentioned visible improvements season on season.

If they have a full-scale plan to develop the ground then there's not much point in continually improving the old one is there.

I love the German flag seating in the South Stand and the fratton end being made completely into corporate boxes in a beautiful crescent, echoing our beloved crest. [:D] Great idea to have the north stand and Milton end a conjoined terrace. Lovely.

Back to The Eisners though... They definitely said they would be investing 10Million into the club for things like infrastructure. We need to remind them that we remember them saying this. The need to get a wiggle on and put together some sort of expansion plan before the windmills come out at the next PST meeting.

No problem with steady improvements, if that matches what is happening on the pitch.
What I would hate to see is the team outstripping the infrastructure. We had that happen once before and that contributed heavily to what the club has suffered recently.

Everyone is anxious to get to the championship but once we get there, then what? Is team going to stagnate while the ground undergoes steady improvements?
I would be very pleasantly surprised if we could manage to be truly competitive, in the league above. Whatever happens, the demands on the budget are going to be far greater in the CS but we are still going to be limited on income derived from attendances.

The lack of progress on the stadium is starting to grate but the fan owned model would not have able to what has been done on and off the pitch over the last 18 months.
Capacity has and can be increased slightly as a by product of H&S work but at some point serious money will have to be spent. The masterplan really should have been completed by now with planning applications ready to be submitted.
The idea that you can increase capacity incrementally as and when attendances rise is a nonsense. At the very least there should be a clear view on the ultimate capacity.

Having listened to the podcast, Redman was doing a fair bit of deflection:

'I'm happy to talk about the stadium plan... I'm not going to share any details of it... watch this space you may be getting a second telly'

Id agree that waiting to see if crowds warrant a bigger stadium is idiotic. I doubt they really think this, perhaps its just another stall?

The interest on a 35M loan @ 3% would be 1,050,000 a year. That works out at needing an extra 2,300 people paying £20 for 23 games a season to cover the interest. Not exactly the hardest thing in the world to achieve! The challenges should lie with the logistics of building on the existing site, not the economics of it. This is why I don't buy Redmans argument.

Double the total for a repayment. It would be a mortgage, innit. Alternatively, start a crowdfund down the shepherds crook. We'll get there in no time! Other alternatives would be a directors loan from big Michael E.

Just pointing out that the numbers aren't astronomical.

I actually think they are going about it in a fairly sensible way. If they had done a Mandaric, they would have been ridiculed loudly and longly, and would lose a lot of credibility.

Let's see what they deliver year on year. My only comment is don't start on the Milton End whatever you do - as that will decrease the capacity. Just stick another tier on the Fratton End OR extend it to the North (which works for both options)

The biggest question for me is - how big should Fratton Park be? If this question is not fully examined and thought through - then we might get a piecemeal development with no overall plan - and we could get a stadium that is difficult to develop in later years.

MilkinsMagic Posted on 01/02/2019 15:45

Andy Redman & Eric Eisner on Express FM

The main limitation of the fan owned club (especially when PST was reluctant to ask its members for further investment) was that we were unlikely to ever be able to afford to redevelop the ground.

I understood that if the club's undeniably wealthy prospective owners took over then the possibility of a redeveloped and much expanded Fratton was more likely. However, I am told that since Michael Eisner took over, much (but not all) of what has been done to the ground was already in the PST budget.

So, after nearly two years, where are we now with this?

I get the "eat what you kill" philosophy but at this point, it seems not much removed from PST's "cut our cloth" budget, aside from the fact that we don't own the club anymore.

More importantly with no substantial progress on Fratton on the horizon it begs the question - what is the actual plan for the Eisner’s with Pompey?

From experience of dealing with wealthy people, they use their wealth to save time when they want to get something done. Clearly there are problems with developing the ground in the land available but a look along the coast to the East or West has shown that even in those two towns (and the Americans should appreciate this) if you build it, they will come.

The lack of action suggests that we have owners with means, but without the will.

You’re right about the mortgage Pedalo, but you need security for a mortgage, not sure we want to be in that position (i.e. if we can’t pay the interest we lose our home).

Rick was confused by the “build it and they will come” comment.....they seem to be doing the opposite, wait for them to come before building it. As Milkins points out, the former worked well for our two neighbours.

Eisner said "build it and will they come" as opposed to "they will come"nn. The more I think about it the more it seems like they don't really want to expand the stadium, just a few improvements here and there.

All I can say is it will be interesting if we make it to the Championship in terms of budget because "eat what we kill" will see us with a small budget for that league without major stadium expansion.

Looking t Brighton, they spent 93Million on their stadium. 30,750 capacity. Their attendances have been:

2011/12: 20,029
2012/13: 26,236
2013/14: 27,283
2014/15: 25,645
2015/16: 25,583
2016/17: 27,996
2017/18: 30,405
2018/19: 30,509

2017/18 was their first year in the prem. We have more or less the same catchment area with the rough edges being from Fareham to Worthing and up as far as hazlemere/Guildford. No reason why we couldn't attract similar or larger crowds.

Pompey without a doubt have always been the biggest supported club along the south coast. Every Pompey fan that goes to most home games know at least one friend who would like to go and watch Pompey but hardly goes due to various reasons. Today’s football supporters have many more distractions than fans of years ago not to watch a football match, and they now demand much better facilities easy access to get to stadiums and that is one of Pompeys biggest problems. Being an island brings its own problems last week with a crowd just under 19k it was a nightmare trying to find somewhere to park. Many side roads now have resident parking only which compounds the problem. I would love to stay at Fratton but realistically a stadium holding 40k which I honestly believe we could fill would have to be built out of the city.

The reason being enclosed in the link. If you asked most people where Pompey would site in the average gate stats for the top flight only - most people would state around 20-25th position.

And - if we hadn't had such a small capacity the last time we were there, the figure would be a chunk higher.

That's the problem with the lop-sided ground - you would need a North stand of around 20k capacity to achieve that figure.

Yep, bearing in mind that the Jackie Millburn stand (not an end) is just under 15k. ie it is lop-sided in 2 cardinal directions. Our stadium would be lop-sided in one cardinal direction only.

It would need to be a similar size to the main stand at Anfield.

20k North stand -could just build one really really big stand [:D]

History would suggest that a 40k stadium would only be filled on the odd occasion, so no reason to move outside the city (and thereby no longer be Portsmouth Football Club) in order to build such a stadium. On a wet Tuesday night it would be more than half empty with no atmosphere.

A 30,000 stadium on the current footprint (which is easily achievable) would be far preferable imho.
