I'm having to move to Salisbury but don't know it or the area very well (recent poisoning aside). I'm going to be quite central, could anyone tell me the areas to avoid living or the good areas? I know a few Pompey fans are up this way so any advice much appreciated.

I don't know the place at all but I'd advise against picking up any scent bottles, whatever the area.

Old Sarum is nice, anywhere central and parking is impossible. Iím in Amesbury, you get a lot more for your money there.

Thanks S_T_S, I need to be near a train line really though (for work and to get to Fratton Park)! Is there anywhere in Salisbury to definitely avoid?

Bemerton Heath and Bishopdown Farm, Iíd avoid like the plague. Are you renting or buying? Both are quite high in Salisbury. Do you need parking? Off road parking is non existent in central areas and on road parking costs

Buying, and yes Iíve got a car. How bad are the bad bits?

The bad parts are pretty rough. Old Sarum has park and ride and itís only a five minute journey to the train station end of town. Parking is extortionate anywhere in town

Thank S_T_S, that's great, I'll look at Old Sarum.

Out of interest, how bad are the bad bits? Are we talking 'Cottage Grove bad,' 'Hilsea bad' or 'Leigh Park bad'?

For your sake hopefully not Leigh Park bad. Surely no job can be worth that?

Definitely not Leigh Park bad! Iíd say itís relative to any town or cityís bad areas. I have friends from Bemerton Heath who are fairly normal. To be fair itís probably no worse than the majority of Portsmouth. Itís run down. Bishopdown Farm is probably the equivalent of Leigh Park though..

I started teaching in Leigh Park and finished up about 40 years later in a posh all girls school. I know who gave me more grief....

If you're not married to the fact of being in the town centre there are plenty of really nice villages in the immediate surrounding area. There's a fast train from Salisbury to Fratton which is highly convenient.

I like Salisbury a lot and prefer to go shopping there than Scumhampton.

Iíd deffo agree with not being in the town centre. Thereís park and ride both sides of town, so not an issue getting into town. Not a fan of shopping there, not a great deal of decent shops and Southampton road is a nightmare if you want any of the stores down there!

Thanks guys, that's really helpful. I asked a bloke at work and he mentioned avoiding Bemberton Heath and the Friary/Friars(?) but nothing about Bishopstown!

I'm not that fussed about being in the centre but I would like to be able to walk to train station in 30-40 minutes or a easy bus ride. I've never been a fan of driving into Portsmouth for the match plus I like to have a beer after the game.
