Looks like Brighton have nabbed our academy head, Dave Wright. I know he's not the only 'head of academy' in the world but it's annoying nonetheless.

Brighton is now at the top of the tree in terms of South Coast clout. We'll get back there soon and start chucking our weight around again.

Bit of compensation and find someone else who's just as good no doubt.

Not great but they're a Premier League Club with bigger & better facilities. To be fair they were worse off than us & have managed to gain Sponsorship from American Express & an extremely rich owner with a lot of influence. We are still in our expansion infancy & unfortunately seen as fair game for poaching of players & staff. Maybe there's an Ex Pompey Player out there who wants to get involved. Someone with experience & passion for the club.

Andy Awford springs to mind, he and Hards did a great job of getting it going from nothing with no cash to spend.
Talking Brighton, must be a good model to follow I would think.

Absolutely not. Parents of that era i have spoken too do not have a good word about Awford. His attitude and ego etc.

Key appointment to work with Mark Kelly whi appears to be doing a great job. It's someone to oversee everything we need and not someone with myth status like Awford.

I knew several of the youngsters that were there at that time and none of them had a bad word to say about Awford. Quite the opposite.

Have to back you up on that. Putting aside his hopeless stint as manager, no one has a bad word to say about Awfs work with the academy.

Paul Hart was doing an excellent job with the youth team.

That's what was being said. I never saw any evidence of it but that was what was said.

I'm sure there are people, at the club, who are far better equipped to make a judgement about any new appointment than any on here.

Hopeless stint as manager which kept us in the football league

One of our worst managers ever. IMO

Yup. He was absolutely awful. Richie Barker was up there too.

If you keep losing good coaches, you won't necessarily replace them with like for like. maybe it is cash, maybe it's just coincidence, maybe there is something else afoot.

Wasn't the last head coach a Pompey lad?

Ref Paul Hart, I heard that he stopped any attempt @ off the cuff skill. It all had to be very regimented @ youth level. In other words boring. Also didn't he appoint that kiwi to take over from him when he moved up to the 1st team. The name escapes me but he was universally loathed apparently, so much so that when he eventually got the bullet one of the youth lads tweeted xmas come early. Paul Hart was a effing dinosaur.

the point about regimentation is well made. I've seen a few coaches who have started the FA approved training. they all seem to stop any attempt to use individual skill, producing teams of youngsters who even at primary age have to play keep ball and play percentage football.
A great shame as what you really need from your system is a few of the robots but an added player with that X Factor that gets you a goal. Coach them out of showing off in their own box, but get them to take on the last man or two where it matters on the pitch.

Interesting thread. I believe flair is often "coached" out of players, which is sad. Try to play the killer pass, or knock it back to your centre back? I know what I'd rather watch.

kingo, coached out is right. It even happens in Parks football. When my lad played under 16's there was a kid who was really blessed skill wise. But because he couldn't tackle very well & didn't have the running capacity of others he was sidelined & eventually walked away. Pathetic hearing the manager calling him out because of the aforementioned but missing the goals he setup & scored.

Thankfully @ national level with Southgate skilled players are being given a chance, hopefully a revolution in English football.
