Well done Gillingham.

A very good defensive display and they didn't look too shabby in attack, in the first half.

Unbeaten record now gone but not too much damage done with Posh losing.

I'm less worried about Posh than Sunderland and Barnsley.

Fair play to Gillingham, they had a formation that we couldn't cope with, and it took away our flow. Their first goal was, similar to Rochdale's, a worldy. The second did us in, like ours did against Coventry.

One of those days, on to the next one etc. We're gonna have bad days and unlucky days this season, up to the players to stand up to it. Still think we're going up [^]

It was a day where accumulators got fücked up:
Top lost 2-0
2nd lost 3-0
3rd lost 4-0
All at home!!!

Breaking it down for the individual goals...

Brown gave away a needless free kick on the edge of our area. This didn’t lead directly to the goal but gave Gillingham possession which meant they then scored from their next attack. Eaves should be given a huge amount of credit for the finish. Think it took everyone by surprise that he finished so well from where he was. Whatmough was the defender on him and should have been tighter to stop the shot coming in. Could MacG have also got a fingertip to it?

It should be noted that it was all Pompey when this went in.

The 2nd goal is much more disappointing to concede. I appreciate that the conditions made it tough with the slippery ball skidding through the area. However, we had 2 opportunities to clear from the corner; firstly through Whatmough letting his man get the flick on, then Nathan Thompson letting his man beat him for the finish.

At the other end of the pitch, we were guilty of spooning far too many shots high & wide. When we did get a ball back across the box, there wasn’t anyone anticipating the tap-in.

Thought the subs were warranted. It wasn’t the day for passing it around, we needed bite & pace and was pleased when Wheeler & Thompson came on for Close & Evans.

Still top of the league after a quarter of the games have been played. 3 more games and we’ll have played a third of the season. Let’s see where we are after Wimbledon (a), Fleetwood (h), Burton (h)

still is still a great start to the season

As somebody said on here yesterday we would be more attacking at home, maybe change the formation but he got shouted down by the usual suspects.

Get a fully covered stadium roof and then we will be fine. Be interesting to see how we get on at Wombles if it rains or there is puff of wind :-(

But we are stll going up, best to get a spanking now and get stronger all over te pitch.

Home form is looking a touch ropey. Head in the sand or get to grips with the issues? Something needs to change as Shrews, Wycombe and Gills were all bottom 6 when they left us with 2 points from 9. It puts pressure on us to sustain our away form.

I believe we will have learned a lot from this game. I'd be surprised if the players don't show a very positive reaction, against Wimbledon.

Gillingham played us at our own game, today. Solid in defence and very effective on the counter attack. I thought they were supurb, on the day.

We can play and will play much better than that.

It’s the home performances that are more of a worry, we look pants, even when we’ve ground out a result, except for maybe Plymouth at home.

It has now been said. This is not the first season when Pompey’s home form has been poor. 3 league games at FP without a win now and how we came away with 3 points against Luton in the opening game of the season will remain one of life’s great mysteries. Yes we’re top and let’s enjoy it but home form needs to improve or we won’t be enjoying it for long.

We still haven’t solved the problem in midfield have we?

We desperately need a midfield general to knit our play together. The defence is good, our forwards will score if they get the chances, midfield is where the problem lies.

At home we need to attack and there’s nobody threading the killer passes through.

We need to make do until January and then do whatever it takes to get an attacking playmaker, it’s difficult though, players like that are in great demand and cost a few bob.
