Ricky’s Friday Fact - this week: 24/01/1961

Did you know, on 24th Jan 1961, the USA came very close to nuking itself. A B52 carrying two 3.2 megaton hydrogen bombs began disintegrating over North Carolina. The first bomb was unarmed, deployed its parachute and landed in a tree. The second bomb was armed and went through 6 of its 7 steps to detonation before crashing into the ground. No one knows why it didn’t complete detonation, and one of its uranium cores has never been found, assumed to be buried deep underground somewhere close to the crash site, 60 miles east of the city of Raleigh.

Ricky’s Friday Fact - this week: 24/01/1961

In January 1966 over Palomares in Spain, an American plane carry 4 nuclear bombs crashed after a mid-air collision while refuelling.
4 American pilots in the army plane and 3 in the refuelling plane died in the explosion.
The 4 bombs hit hit the ground or sea and none exploded.
Not only would most of Spsin and Portugal been decimated we wouldn’t have got to see the 1966 World Cup Final. A true disaster.

I was in the Med with the Andrew (HMS Scarborough), and the buzz was that we might be deployed as part of the search. Didn't happen.
