Well that was pretty dire!

Defense did well to hold on to that and Curtis looks formidable but as a team effort.......

Just couldn't seem to pass the thing or hold on to the ball.

As opposed to Luton who played well and lost!!

Me and cunny must've watched a different game to some of you.

I'm struggling to remember when we've played that poor and won before. Take away the goal and it took 75 minutes before we strung more than a few passes together, and that involved Burgess ffs!

On the plus side, the last line of defence did well, especially Clarke, and the keeper looks good.

Just hope the old "playing poor and winning is the sign of a championship winning team" cliche comes true.

Luton must be gutted at their lack of success down here, another positive.

Remember reading in papers few weeks ago some of the top managers giving double sessions to get fit. Remember Cook putting players through rigourous sessions so players lasted 90mins.KJ prefers to get players working with the ball creating little partnerships
Personally didn't think players looked fit. Yes it was hot but didn't seem to affect Luton as much as us. And as for ball control there seemed to be a total lack of it

I would not have criticised fitness (part from Pitman but he never looks fit anyhow) but the passing was the worst I've seen for years.
Still 3 points playing badly and I can't believe we will play that badly again going forward.
Although I don't get Jacket's arguement that Hawkins was put on to hold the ball up. Whenever we put him on, pretty much on his own we continue to lose possession. Pretty obvious that if he wins a header (which he did not today) someone else will get the knockdown unless he has someone else within range.
I imagine there will be a few changes next game to try and retain the ball

I think fitness is a concern. When Talbot left, he blasted Jackett for leaving fitness up to the players. I think they're professional athletes and should be able toanage it, however we definitely looked a step behind Luton. On the flip side, there won't be many games as draining as today's was in that heat, and better game management should be more important than better fitness.

What worried me today was the tactics/formation - apparently 4-4-2 but it led to us being totally over-run and conceding massive possession throughout. in midfield Walkes and Haunstrup looked lost, and Naylor was non-existent. We struggled throughout to pass the ball and to retain possession. We only won because the two centre backs were simply magnificent, Luton hit the post and bar and our keeper made a couple of top saves. The only time we looked at all cohesive was when Close came on as he clearly can pass the ball.

not sure the formation had anything to do with it today. If not one player can pass to another in a blue shirt you could play 11 in midfield and still get over run. Just looked like too much trying to play the killer ball every time rather than simple passes to get things going and then the final ball at the right time.

Same old boring, tedious Jackar$e football. Bailed out by a strong defence (none of whom signed by the fella), a team that yet again failed to muster a single shot on target save for the error that lead to the goal.

Westwood can relax a bit longer in the Newcombe save in the knowledge that he's not actually missing a thing. Worse atmosphere for a first game of the season as most of us are comatosed by the sheer tedium of Jackar$e only attacking plan - Chuck the ball to Pitman/Hawkins and hope for the fecking best.

With Jackar$e, it's like watching the barsteward son from a brief fling between Paul Hart and Tony Pulis. Cue posts about 3 points and all that. A season of that football fills me with dread.

Id rather lose and us have a go, than stick 11 men on the penalty spot from the kick off and hope we don't concede. Jackar$e still thinks Hawkins is a striker. Hilarious stuff, if it hadn't been done for the entire 2017 season already.

TBF it wasn't awful, but it wasn't great.

The good points, the kit and pitch look good, we won, we got 3 points.Curtis looks the nuts, Taylor and Brown played well as did MacG.

The bad (ish) points, The weather wasn't conducive to good football,we didn't play /pass the ball well, we had no cohesion, we're weak down the left (Haunstrap isn't the answer FB/WB yes left midfield no). Jury still out on Walkes in Midfield (personally I would've preferred Rose), Pitman was non existent.

IMO we need 3 players, striker, midfield, left wing.
If the rumours of Devante Cole, Colclough and Towell are correct then they should give us a very good squad.

Still first win & 3 points PUP.

Crikey, 90 minutes into a 46 game season and the bedwetting has already commenced.

The transfer window is still open for a few days, and the loan window for a bit beyond that. It was game 1, first competitive match.

Some promising signs, some bad passing but Pompey won. If they were playing like this and losing in November I'd be concerned, but it isn't, it's 5 past July.

And it must have been something like 30 degrees out there. Whist these are professional athletes no one trains to perform at high intensity in those temperatures. The mind wanders, the concentration goes, it's hard to stay hydrated enough and replace lost salts.

So yeah, panic over Mainwaring.

Nobody's bedwetting. People are just saying it how it was. Awful. Yes it was hot, but same for both sides and Luton tore us to shreds. The problems look to be the same as last season and that's the concern because KJ should have sorted it. Terrible midfield (Haunstrup??? Dear God, no!!)and no support for Pitman. Take the lucky 3 pts and move on but let's see a little bit of flair and life in the side next week. So disappointing to see Hawkins get worse with every performance.

So twotee, you think this was just a one off? I wish it was but unfortunately we had a full season of this type of krap last time around, excluding the Wigan and Oxford home games (one of which Jackar$e wasn't even there).

Saturday was like picking up a tenner off the pavement. You'd take it but know full well you won't deserve it. From the off we play like a team down to 10 men. I'm not having a go at the players because they worked hard. I felt sorry for Pitman who had to hold the ball up against two men usually and then wait ten minutes for everybody to run forward from the penalty spot to catch up.

Jackar$e football is utterly boring, tedious and predictable. You only need to score one goal against us and get a result because we just create nothing but hump and hope. Hence 20 defeats last season. Hawkins worked hard but when that's your one and only form of attack it's a bit tough on the kid.

Don't give a feck if it's call "bedwetting" or whatever the hip phrase is, or if you want to name call like a petulant child, watching this type of football is utterly mind numbing.

If that's your idea of entertainment I envy your ability to have such a low threshold.

Cant speak for Lor but for me no I don't want to see KJ bombed out. But there was an air of ineptitude about the tactics Saturday. Like for like replacements when using 2 of the subs was daft, we needed bodies in midfield not take one off put one off same position. Same with Pitman & Hawkins. I cannot for the life of me understand how KJ didn't work it out.
We'll never ever struggle under KJ but for me we need to keep winning to keep the wolf from the door because poor football & poor results will only see one outcome. Personally I hate the upheaval changing managers brings so for me I'd say Oi KJ up yer game Moosh especially in the type of football stakes.

I agree we were awful. But there have been changes in personnel and sometimes these things take a while to gel. No one is denying we played badly.

Game one is far too early though to make a judgement on a team. Give them at least to the end of September to establish a rhythm before sticking the knife in on management and players.

I think we look far bigger and stronger than in the last two seasons. You want to build from the back and we looked pretty solid at the back. It's evident from last season we need a striker of better quality to support Brett Pitman. Hopefully within the remaining transfer window that will happen.

He actually signed 3 out of the back 5 (mcgivillray, brown and thompson) from Saturday and has been the first one to put real faith in whatmough. But hey that wouldn't fit in the agenda so let's pretend they were all signed by someone else [^][rle]

Firstly, I never said anything about sacking the manager (particularly as we gave him a contract extension last season). I merely pointed out that his teams are set up in such a negative, boring and predictable fashion for at least the vast majority of the last season and kicked off again in the same old piffy bollards manner on Saturday. Like I said, I envy you if you can find the regularity of the mindless fodder served up on Saturday to be entertaining.

As for the defence comment, I accept he's signed those three players but the core of that area he inherited. And to suggest he's the first one to put "real faith" in Whatmough is rather stretching it. He was injured for most of last season and it's not as if it's first appearance is it. Anyway, to put your mind at rest, I don't have an "agenda" of any kind. Watching the same old hoofball week in, week out, is just unfortunately not my kind of thing.

So to recap guys, there is no suggestion of manager sackings and no slagging off players in the game. Just a different opinion to some of you on here. Is that ok?
