Ricky's Friday Fact - this week: Rainbows

Did you know, in our part of the world, it's possible to see a rainbow at any time of day between mid-September and mid-March, this is because over the autumn/winter the sun is always below 40 degrees above the horizon which is a requirement to see a rainbow. In mid-June you won't see a rainbow between around 9.30am and 5pm because the sun is too high in the sky. On the equator you'll never see a rainbow between 10am and 2pm, no matter what time of year.

You could always refract white light into a prism as Isaac Newton did in the early 1670's - resolving it into its component colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet. [^]

Clever mush that Newton

There was a nice picture of a full rainbow (360 deg) taken from the Spinnaker Tower last year.

Obviously Sir Isaac was inspired by a copy of DSOTM by Pink Floyd.

If you want to be as smug as me in the pub ricky try this one.

Challenge your mates to be the first person to count to 20.

You take it in turns and can select either 1, 2 or 3. So if I start and say 1 then you could say 2 3 or 4. Let's say you say 4 ie my one plus 3 =4. Then I can say 5 6 or 7. Etc until one of you gets to 20.

The secret to winning the game is in the following key numbers 4 8 12 16 . If you get to any of them you can't lose! Just keep going through those milestones and you will win as when you get to 16 anything they say you can add 1 2 or 3 to and get to 20.

Secret is to let them go first then you can always get to 4 then you can't lose!

Get it?

they do not sir.

remember it doesn't matter which milestone you hit.

if you go first you can't guarantee a 4! but you will try to get 8 etc.

On QI Stephen Fry said Rainbows only actually have 6 colours but because 7 is lucky indigo was invented as an erroneous seventh colour. I'll be honest, I still claim to see 7.

It depends on the outcome of the bidding war.

Is anyone else brave enough to take on the reigning champion?

Three.

Credit where it's due, that was some move [^]

I had a bite to eat and a few babychams at the Plough just after Xmas last year. Hopefully they've got a new chef in since then, it was pretty dreadful.
