Of Leyton Orient.
The striker had scored 23 goals in 41 appearances for them this year.
One year left on his contract.
Apparently needs a few chances to score!!
Smooth those edges and the potential is obvious.
What would we offer?
An undisclosed fee about the 100k mark?

We don't have a great track record of bringing young non-league strikers through.

We do have a great track record of bringing non-league strikers in, playing them in defence, leaving them out of match day squads, and bombing them back out on loan to non-league before letting them go, though.

Can't imagine his agent will be that enthralled about our interest.

Subotic was signed from FC Basel. Hardly non-league.

Ben Tollit - is a winger, not a striker.

Liam Sayers - was just a nipper when he arrived. How many academy kids make it?

Miles Storey -- On loan from league 1 Swindon, so not non-league

John Akinde - from Crawley, who should be non-league but aren't.

Ryan Bird - Had a decent run in the team, but wasn't good enough. Can't say he didn't get a fair crack.

James Keene - was playing in the Champions league for Elfsborg, ffs.

So, what point are you tryiing to make, exactly?

Subotic -> Grossetto, 5th tier of Italian football

Ben Tollit -> Tranmere, non-league

Liam Sayers -> Dorchester, non-league

Miles Storey -> Newport County, non-league

John Akinde -> Alfreton, non-league

Ryan Bird - Hawks, non-league

James Keene - a tour of weak non-league equivalents in Israel, India and Sweden

Happy to take my winger in Tollit off my list if you take your winger in Lowe off yours.

The point is this: We have a poor record of finding diamond strikers in the rough. In the main, we sign strikers, play them for less than half a season (if that), declare them rubbish and send them to non-league.

We stunt more strikers careers than we progress.

Guy Whittingham the exception proving the rule.

(A litte aside, Pompey's sole striking specialist on the coaching staff, Robbie Blake, managed 0.25 goals per game in his career. Guy Whittingham was well on the way to twice as good at 0.40).

So far we have two strikers plucked from non-league who failed and two who made the grade then.

I'd be surprised if many other league teams had a 50% success rate signing non-league strikers.

Both Kenny and Joe have shown that they can improve players they have. Buying young promising players is our strategy now so like it or lump it. Obviously not everyone will make the grade.

Why has this lad stumbled through the last 2 seasons.

*rolls eyes* Sure, if improving them means "Go and work on your own fitness by yourself son, and if you look good in training we'll keep picking you"

[rle]

Look at Chaplin. He's a brick XXXXXX house compared to last season.

But still labouring. He is one of the faces who have been around the longest (maybe actually the longest?) but is he pushing to start every week?

Do you credit the management with Matt Clarke and Jamal Lowe's performances this season? I mean really?

The last two players I honestly think a Pompey manager improved through their coaching and man management with Amine Lingazi and Kal Naismith, under Cook.

We released one of those (Jackett's biggest mistake this season IMO) and the other one epitomises League 1 through his inconsistency - and he'll be at Wigan in the summer.

That isn't bringing players through. That's turning them over.

I can't think of anyone we can credit our current set up of having improved.

And that takes me and this thread back to whether or not we have the resources here to improve players.

Our track record says no.

And I am sure that Bonne's agent and parents will note that if we showed an interest.

More than happy with our strategy being to go after non-league players - delighted in fact - but we aren't going to get anywhere beyond pot luck with that unless we sort our coaching staff out because we're not teaching these young strikers anything.

We're just hoping they swim rather than sink.

I have no idea what they get up to in training but Clarke, Close, Haunstrup, Lowe and Jack are all miles better now than they were a year ago. Wallace and especially Webster improved massively while they were here too. You don't get to the verge of the L1 playoffs with a team with an average age of ours if the coaching staff aren't teaching the youngsters anything.

What a load of old B O L L O C K S Optimus.

I think Clarke, Haunstraup, Close Lowe all have improved under KJ this year.

And taking it the other way I can maybe only think of Naismith, slightly and Burgess probably who have stagnated or gone a little backwards.

I am sure non league players with aspirations of making it will look at Pompey now and say wow yeah great club with a great chance for me to make my mark there. And if they dont think that are they really the sort of young players we want anyway.

"And if they dont think that are they really the sort if young players we want anyway."

Contraversial I think you may have just touted Chaplin for a move there.

I can't see any non-league striker look at Pompey and think "yeah that's the place".

They'll take one look at Pitman playing up top on his own, Chaplin and Hawkins failing to make squads, then ask "ok, who else has been asking about me?"

Your point was that we sign non league strikers, XXXXXX them about and send them back to non-league.

Subotic, Miles Storey, John Akinde and James Keene didn't sign from non-league so you can't have them. Or you should have included loads of other league strikers we signed and sent back to non-league. Like that Westcarr and Tubbs.

Ben Tollit -> Still a winger. Also, we signed him from Skelmersdale United in the 8th tier of English football, and now he plays at Tranmere, in the 5th tier of English football. It's hard to argue that coming to Pompey had a negative effect on his career.

Liam Sayers -> Our academy. Not our first team. SO you can't count him, either.

Ryan Bird - He went to the Hawks on loan. He next signed for...Cambridge United. A league 2 team. He subsequently played for 3 other league 2 teams before returning to non-league. So, we actually took a non-league striker and gave him a league career.
