Player Budget

What was our budget for this season? Thought it was around the £3m mark? Our income from gates alone must be well in excess of £7m. Catering and merchandise would push that figure up. And we couldn't afford to spend any money in January...doesn't add up to me.

Obviously, even if the figure is 7 million, it's no pure profit we can spend on anything we like.

Also, we spent money in Jan, and tried to get in the experienced midfielder we needed, but his club couldn't get a replacement, so they wouldn't let him go.

Loans aren't free. There are wages, sometimes fees to pay.

Sounds like you're trying to make out the the Eisners are doing a bunk with around 4 million in cash.

This is clearly nonsensical.

We must be the only club in the world with a billionaire owner that spends sweet fa on the player budget. The estimated £3m is from what I understand season ticket sales, merchandising and TV revenue (not an exhaustive list, but covers big ticket items).

Whatís the point in having in voting for a mega rich owner if heís not willing to spend a little more? Iím not talking £millions, just a few hundred thousand, which is 10%. That could be the difference in signing 2-3 quality players as opposed to mediocre ones.

To try and answer your question, the point of voting for a mega rich owner is because:

1: He knows how to build a sustainable and successful business
2: Eat what we kill. I prefer the Ingerlish 'youve got to walk before you run' but the sentiment is the same. We need to fix a lot of things with the club's infrastructure first, before we start spunking wads on player budget.
4: The stadium is at its highest capacity for a few years now. Moving in the right direction but not a long term solution. Stadium master plan #1 priority in my opinion.
4: I like some of the noises made from the new head scout. On paper he looks like a fantastic appointment to start growing our academy in strength.

It might not seem like it but since the summer there has actually been quite a lot of positive development at the club. Even though it may not have been immediately translated onto the pitch.

On the topic of the squad, i dont think we are a million miles away from having a team that can properly compete for a playoff spot. Couple of midfielders and a striker and we should be better placed to have a go next year.

I know they said when they took over that they wanted to build the club sustainably and not spend loads of money the club doesn't generate on wages in an attempt to buy success given what happened last time we tried that apprach... but SPEND SPEND SPEND SPEND SPEND SPEND SPEND U R A SQUILLIONAIRE GOD DAMN IT SPEND SPEND SPEND SPEND SPEND SPEND WE EXPECT SUCCESS IMMEDIATELY.

I'm just wondering why we can't seem to afford the wages for a couple of decent signings in January, ie central midfielder which we've been crying out for all season, and a striker when we're getting the 2nd highest gates in the division. Not talking about spending millions, just enough to make us competitive which we haven't been this year.

Who is paying all the wages for the injured players - including a number of left backs - who won't be playing again this season?

£3M obviously wasn't enough to be competing with the likes of Blackburn, Wigan etc; i don;t think the owners expected us to reach the top 6 tbh but when we did needed to give KJ an extra few Quid to strengthen in the January window & cover the injuries. Re the commanding midfielder we should have had other options lined up not relied on just the one. Only 2 of the loans look any good Ronan & Walkden. Not sure what's happening with Sammut but certainly worth some game time until the end of the season if we can afford his wages.

Jizz ... we could afford a central midfielder in January, it was part of the plan to get one. We didn't get one because his club could not replace him in time, not because of lack of effort on our part or a lack of budget.

Mike. Summat (spellin) is contracted and would not be able to play for us. Here for a trial to see if suitable when he is out of contract in summer

I don't expect to be competing with Blackburn or Wigan as they have parachute payments and with Wigan, investment from the owners.

I'm just saying that with gates of 18000 plus we should be able to bring in some experienced players who will make a difference rather than loaning some youngsters who, quite frankly have had little or no impact.

Is the budget for next season similar, because if it is then I shall start to question where the rest of the money is going. Surely we can have a £5m budget...15000 gates x £15 ave x 23 games is over £5m, and we have gates of 17-18k.

Jizz

there is wage contstraints here is an extract for you under the fair play rules:

Clubs in the League 1 and League 2 operate within a Spending Constraint framework termed Salary Cost Management Protocol (SMCP). SCMP limits spending on player wages to a percentage of club Turnover. In League 1 clubs can spend a maximum of 60% of their turnover on wages - in League 2, the limit is 55%.

It was said earlier this year that the budget is adequate for this and next year so assuming it is staying the same.

KJ said this week words along the line that we need 24 for first team squad and we will have to see what we can do intimating not changing much but we will need to be a bit more clever. I think this clever idea is about getting players in now who are not playing at the moment in higher division sides and who are out of contract this summer. This way we can have a look at them in training.(try before we buy (sign)) I am not really expecting any marque signings but a more stable squad where players play in their positions and we get a style of play we can identify with

Deep Blue Agreed on midfielder but we should have had a backup player. Even the top Prem League clubs don't always secure their main target signings.

Mikey so you agree he is contracted till August and so would not be able to play for us this season as u suggested (put the u in so you can come back and comment) as the Grammar Police Inspector
I like putting in the odd mistake as it humours me when posters have little to find fault other than an obvious error

Stubby - You Got Me! We could have moved for him on loan until August though as our Commanding Midfielder fell through but were too slow as usual. Chelsea's training pitches are just up the A3 at Cobham & we should really try to forge a link there. They probably have the best Youth Development in the country. Too clever for me by far but I hate bad Grammar & there's plenty to witness on here!
