Ricky's Friday Fact - this week: time and date

Did you know, each day, between 10am and 11am UK time, there are people around the world who would report it being three different days. This is because the international date line doesn't stick to the 180 degree longitude meridian for political and economic purposes. As a result, as the clock ticks over to 10am on Tuesday in the UK, people on the Pacific island of Kiritimati are 14 hours ahead, and so Wednesday has just begun. However, on the islands of American Samoa which lie to the west of Kiritimati, they are 11 hours behind, and so it is still Monday there. The two islands are only about 1300 miles apart, but due to the shape of the date line, for an hour each day, they are two days apart.

That's nothing.

The Isle of Wight is only a few miles from Pompey but the time difference is about 30 years.

Thought this was a decent little fact, but it's sinking without a trace.

Ricky's Friday Fact - this week: time and date

When Trotsky, lenin and their western backers took control of Russia via the Russian Revolution on October 25th 1917, one of the first things they did was to change their calendar from the Julian Calender to the Gregorian one.

So, before this event became public knowledge, some of the populous were in fact 13 days behind and still in October whilst the Reds had moved the date to the first few days of November.

It's always been known as the October Revolution though.

I also thought that mine was a decent comment - but it is also vanishing without trace.

BUMP:

Gary Saunders once punched someone so hard, he punched them into the middle of next week - FACT

Apparently, the geezer in question missed his signing on slot, his next giro, and 4 days of his life.

Not as amazing as the Russian Revolution yarn - but still rather interesting.

I'm not smart enough to be Gary.

He manages to live very cheaply, and gets many services for free. I'm still paying for lots of life's essentials.
