I hear a lot about this legendary place from 40 years ago. was it really scary, was it full of silage, straw and worzels?

Were they one of the top 10 or top 150 firms in the country? Did Dougal drink there? Has anyone up north heard of this of this place - or even anyone from along the south coast?

Did Iteem use the ladies or the gents toilet?

That post by Turkish is the funniest thing I think I've ever read on the internet.

This "Warren 76" lady hands keeps going on about nobodies ever heard of it except him and he's been beaten up so many times by Pompey I think it's addled his brain.
Any older lads on here ever heard what happened or is it another one of those quaint little lady hands lies.

Chi Saint is trying to make sense of it all.

(To Turkish) "I am assuming this is a wind up....are you writing a fictional novel, in the vein of 50 Shades of Grey based on the obvious vicarious pleasure in relation of the actions of others. Albeit those actions are, from reading others posts, somewhat romanticised with the passage of time. As for your final quote "gone from being the most terrifying away day in England" I assume you are referring to some of the night spots as such as Fridays or Barberella's?

I don't wish to cast doubt on your 'experiences' but certainly whilst i'm a proud Sotonian, this exposition doesn't resemble the days you cite".

"Which part gave it away?

Some of it is true Krackers, Chelsea headhunters did break into Springfield school in 1984,

Pompey did turn up at an FA cup game against Millwall at the Dell in 1985 and Paul Scarrott was Forest top boy in the late 80s, liked a drink and is dead. I just put a pompeyesque spin on the events".

"From a purely historic point Southampton and the Dell was very much part of the whole scene and were intrinsically linked. Nothing could be taken for granted. The town was a haven of nightlife and rival gangs from all over the place that would band together under, in front of and to the left of the 'chocolate boxes' on the Milton starting with the 'boot boys' in about 1967, then skinheads, suedeheads, smoothies and onto the post-punk 'casuals' which still exist in numbers these days.

I could do this more detailed, however, off the top of my head it was kinda like this in catagories.

Names/origins of some of the crews: The two most ominous were the massive Wimpson (aka Hatchet Men) and the small, yet extremely tasty Market Diner from St Marys. Weston, Portswood, Pylands, Sholing, Thornhill/Hightown, Shirley Warren and the Flower Roads all had their fair share of wrong 'uns. Along with that they'd be small bands from outlying areas like Hedge End, Eastleigh and even my 'frontline' manor out in the Western Wards of Fareham (Swanwick, Sarisbury, Titchfield Common) apologies to anyone over looked.

Names: Some of those that were to regarded cautiously had names like Killer, Bootsie, Charlie, Dougal, Malc, Jessie, Vic, Hoss, Gilo and Psycho...sorry cannot be any more specific than that".

I've never heard of so much XXXXXX! Any team that talks themselves up are nothing.
It's true in the 70s Pompey went to the dell but we did most weekends we were away and we sang Pompey songs with impunity!
Let other teams talk about who's who.
I'll not listen to any Pompey fan in a forum talk about ourselves. It's embarrassing.
Other teams fans can do that. Read what they have to say about the sides from the south coast.
There, you will find the truth.
For me, small firms from places like Lincoln, Hartlepool and Doncaster got my admiration.
Millwall and West Ham and then Leeds and manure for numbers.
Dark horses and real XXXXXXs are Brum and Spurs.
Cardiff also deserve a mention.

Chelsea had a little pop in the Fratton End 73/74 ish, and did so with small numbers, stayed just about the whole game, albeit with coppers separating both sets. 84 in second division they swamped Fratton , just about the best numbers at ours, whole Milton end and a third of the upper north. Night game , honours even during the day, but hectic after, especially after they pulled the cutlery out.
Wolves , we gave them a torrid time up there in 79 ish , since then they’ve earns a reputation for bullying up there and even after they’ve done a bit of bullying I do not recall them ever trying there luck down here. But hey, opinions will always differ depending on personal experiences.

Prozac, Alan Biley equalizer. Ref Chelsea I went to all 3 Wimbledon cup games in 79/80. 2out the 3 @ Plough Lane & both times we went in vast numbers. Chelsea were in with the dons both times but @ ft were nowhere to be seen.
Millwall always were a different kettle of fish, the home game in 81 was unreal. Fighting in the bogs under the FE, pitch invasions, in the end Barry Kitchener had to go in amongst them & appeal for calm. They were mental that day & yet that was quiet compared to some of the 70's games.
