Does anyone know the situation with Gary O’Neil at Bristol City? I don’t think he’s making the match day squads and I know he’s 34 but if he’s not injured then I reckon he’d do a good job centre-right for the second part of the season.

Age is a condition not an injury

Frank, did we do a 10 stretch together back in the 80's/early 90's?

Why would we want to bring back a 34 year old to the club?

Is it just because he has played here before?

How much better will May or Close be than him in 12-18 months?

To be fair, he is a 34 midfielder that plays for a team currently 3rd in the Championship. But no, it’s not simply because he was here previously, more that we are well aware of what he can do and we do need some bite in midfield as we can look a bit soft. It also wouldn’t hurt for Close and the others to learn from him.

And I did only say for the 2nd part of this season. If it is correct that we’re not going to splash any cash in January and we wanted to bring in a midfielder, we’d have to be realistic with what we could get.

To be fair - Merson was 34 years old – and he stepped down a division. He was a bit classier than O'Neil though.

O'Neil would probably be fit enough, and would be better than O'Keefe, but would he want to come down for half a season? I also see he has got the No28 jersey this season - from No 6 last. he certainly would be a leader on the pitch.

Can we afford him?

It's been a good while since we've had a wet bag post creaming for O'Neil and Taylor to come back, cheers for the laugh lads [^][:D]

Oh no! It’s a keyboard warrior troll attack! I don’t see what’s wrong with this, it’s not nostalgia and it’s not rose-tinted, players do often play for teams more than once don’t they? Yes, O’Neil is a strong player that we’ve got a history with but so what? All that means is we know he puts in a shift and we could do with someone who can do what he can do right now, not next season and forever more but for the rest of this season. He’s also out of contract at the end of the season so probably wants to be playing. We have to be realistic with what we could get/afford, I’m sorry but Ronaldo etc won’t be turning up anytime soon.

Why do we need a Gary O'neil type player ? We've got Lowe playing well in that position with Evans as back up, and Bennett & Naismith also able to play there.

The only position we need to strengthen IMO is left back, and centre back cover unless Whatmough will be back in the new year. Otherwise I can't see a need to change anything.

In my opinion we’ve looked soft and a bit lost in the midfield this season. Close, Lowe and May might well step up in the long term but right now we could do with someone taking some responsibility there. There’s a reason the captain is usually a midfielder. Either way, sounds like he’s injured and not available.
