Ricky's Friday Fact - this week: States

Did you know, if the indvidual states of the USA went their own way, California and Texas would both be in the top 10 largest economies in the world at 5th and 10th respectively. Incidentally, removing the USA from the top spot would push the UK up to 4th spot, with France down in 6th behind California.

Unfortunately there is no mechanism in the US constitution for individual states to break away from the Evil Empire.
When a bunch of them did try back in the day they got seriously duffed up for their efforts.

California will almost certainly overtake the UK in the very near future.

Some people think it has already happened.

Texas can legally decide to leave the US if it so wanted.

Well Texas was part of the bunch that tried and got duffed up for their efforts, so I'might not sure that their legal status is any different from the other States.

Good luck with that Texas:
'States cannot secede from the Union by an act of State' (Texas v White US Supreme Court ruling)
'If there was any constitutional issue resolved by the Civil War, it is that there is no right to secede' Antonin Scalia, recently deceased US Supreme Court Justice.

Ricky I think your factbase maybe a little out of date. France got ahead of us the morning after the referendum.

Multiple measures of GDP tuff, nominal, purchasing power parity, GNP, GNI, so different measures can show different rankings.

Ricky's figures were nominal, from the US govt, and as stated above.
