Personally I am worried about 6 - it bears no resemblance to the original design which I think as much as possible should be kept for continuity and the fact it was one of the best badges around. The ones with just FC on are ridiculous. It needs the name - every club is an FC. (Maybe FFS! would work?). Number three for me but without the football which will not reproduce well when the logo is reduced in many applications (it will just look like a blob and is unnecessary). Put the FC after Portsmouth at the top and 1898 at the bottom where FC is at present and job done. We don't need a complete rebrand.

2 & 3 are fine if you remove that stupid football and the christmas tree star but that won't happen. If you put our crest with the proper star and crescent on 6 then we haven't changed the star and crescent at all.

I can't believe how bad the options are. The Advisroy Board have failed big time if they think a badge with a football on it, or an unattached FC, is acceptable. What is distinctive about Pompey in a football or an FC ??

That just leaves number 6, which I don't particularly like but at least has no 'no-no' in it like the other 5. And at least it merges together two past traditional badges, and I quite like the splash of red on it.

If I had to choose from those 6, 3 but definitely loose the little football and have a more traditional star. Not sure it would look right on a playing shirt though. More suitable to put on stuff to sell in the shop. Or 4, but add a P to the FC ffs. And instead of PFC at the bottom maybe a subtle PFC in the middle of the star. Just do enough to make a copy write achievable for me.

Just edit this to add - If sticking FC at the bottom of what is near enough the traditional badge is enough to get a copy write - do it more subtly

Deep, forgive my ignorance. Consumer law isn't really my thing.

If no one else has a trademark for the current badge, how come the club can't apply for it?

I get that it's a chance to refresh things, I just wondered what was stopping them legally owning the current version?

The way I understand it is that it is also the city crest and we cannot trademark it for that reason. It needs to be original artwork and not an exact replica of another design which apparently is what it is at the mo. ME with his business background wants something unique and original so that he can market it and make money out of it. Copyright can be got around by some subtle amends to the existing marque.

I was quite amused by one of the comments - 'too similar to the existing one'.

Bearing in mind that most people don't want a change, why would that be a problem?

I would like 4 if it said 'PFC', the 'FC' just looks plain wrong.

I'm sure someone will tell me why we couldn't have 'PFC'.

6 is laughable IMO, they'll be introducing 'happy clappers' next.

How come we spent all those years in the greedy league happily making shedloads of money with our crest without resorting to such pitiful design options? Next he'll be buying up pompey web links for Malaysia in preparation for our champions league run.....

There is no pressing need right now to change the badge. There is no massive line of unscrupulous companies queuing up to market products worldwide for a l1 club just right now. So why the mad rush? We do however need our ground sorted out, our yoof setup actually working to a level that competes with our rivals and our team moving in the right direction.

The embroidered one actually doesn't look bad. Someone put it on Facebook earler.

They're all XXXXXX with the exception of No.4 perhaps - and that says just FC so that's XXXXXX too.

I'm not looking for work, but I've spent twentyfive years designing identities for a living - I've worked on design projects for arsenal, Man Citeh and Zenit St Petersberg, so I say with some authority that whoever is churning this stuff out isn't thinking hard enough, isn't crafting enough and is generally taking the XXXXXX. Football in a star? we may as well copy the scummers and have Bertie Basset waving a scarf.

Absolutely, the greatest equity of any club is the history and that is inextricably linked to the badge. The issues with the current badge should be:
- It looks a little too fat
- The crescent is a bit too mad-smile
- There's no date
- The typography is totally inappropriate
- Tweak the blue
- Maybe, and I'm not saying there should, be some red?

That's it, all other changes can be made to the supporting stuff.

Not having a go, Tufnell, but all changes to football club badges attract fierce criticism (especially on't'internet where everybody thinks they're a designer). It's the nature of the beast.

Not saying the new Pompey suggestions are OK but the efforts from the clubs you quote weren't particularly well received: arsenal ("one of the worst rebrands in history."); Manchester City ("doesn't include Football Club or FC."); Zenit St Petersburg ("too simplistic and unoriginal - just Zenit."). This, in addition to the usual "looks like the work of a five-year old" etc...

Bear with me folks. I have worked as a graphic designer since 1972 without a week out of work. How the fvck I have managed that I don't know but what I do know is the design business is about as difficult to be successful in long term as the music business. It's another one of those jobs where everyone knows better and has an opinion. That's fair enough especially when you factor in the passionate sense of ownership of fans of a football club. Logo/marque/brand design is the most difficult discipline of all in the graphic design spectrum. You have to get the essence and operations of an organisation in an image and a word or two - not easy. So please don't be too hard on these efforts - they are nearly there - just a few tweaks on 3/4 and we have in my opinion a result.

Deebo, the problem is we are not being offered the chance of proposing a few tweaks, we are being offered one of these 6 options. The tweaking should have been done by the advisory board before they got put to the vote. If that had been done right we would not have 6 options where only one does not have either have a daft ball or an isolated FC on it, and that one seems pretty universally hated.

My understanding was the work is not a fait accompli as the survey allows for comments which I assume would be taken into account if enough were made on the same theme. My biggest client had a rebrand a year or two back and only consulted in-house and produced the biggest pile of unworkable rubbish that I have to work on virtually on a daily basis. A Russell Group University with the resources and available talent to produce something engaging, relevant and effective and it bombed. What hope have we got with our football club if they, with a Marketing Department of nearly 100 experts, can't get it right?
